I'm piloting using DPM 2007 to backup and restore data from shares on a
Windows Server 2008 R2 failover cluster file server. This has lead to a few
questions:

1. Since DPM doesn't actually backup share permissions without a System
State backup, what's the difference between a Share backup and a Volume
backup? Why would I choose one over the other?

2. If I backup the data using a Volume backup, how can I get the share
permissions restored? I tried restoring a System State backup onto one of the
cluster nodes, but I suspect that the permissions on the folder were
defaulted when the node rebooted to finish the SS restore (thus failing the
share over to a different node). And what if I want to restore the share to a
different server? I can't just overwrite the System State...

3. Is there really no way to restore share permissions to a single file or
folder structure in a share? Restoring the System State seems like an
over-broad answer to the question of restoring share permissions.

Thanks for any enlightenment on this subject...

Hi,
if you are protecting the folder which is being shared then the share
permission would also be backed up. are you seeing otherwise?
we always backup data only at the volume level I.e even for the share backup
DPM internally translates share path into its corresponding folder path and
backup the folder.

When I restore a Shared directory only the NTFS permissions are restored, and
the restored copy of the directory is not shared. If I then turn on sharing,
only the default "Everyone" is listed in the sharing permissions and I need
to manually recreate all share permissions.

Some of the directories I'm backing up have fairly complex sharing
permissions and it's a pain to recreate them all.
