When we access the mails in the Outlook, we found that the Outlook hang up
for some time under the following conditions:
1. Whenever a mail with large attachment(s) is selected and immediately the
mouse is focused and clicked on another mail.
2. When multiple mails (some with large attachments) are selected.
When believe that the behaviour is related to the access of the mail by the
CRM add-in, and caused the anti-virus software to scanning the large
attachments (information is proivided at the end of this message).
After following the instruction provided by the information below, the
response was normally. However, anti-virus protection is a must in our
environment.
Does anyone know how the reason why the CRM add-in needs to access the
attachement, and are there ways to avoid it?
Thanks,
Gordon

Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition Exchange Plug-in scans attachments
multiple times
Situation:
You install the Microsoft Exchange plug-in on clients. When users use the
preview pane in Outlook, you find that the clients request the attachments
from the Exchange server more than once.
Solution:
This is due to a security feature. In order to avoid caching the attached
files on the local client computer in an unencrypted state, the plug-in has
to read the contents of the files remotely. This makes it necessary to
request the file repeatedly.
If you need to minimize bandwidth use on your network, disable the plug-in,
or do not install it with new clients. If the plug-in is disabled or not
installed, Symantec advises using a product such as Symantec AntiVirus for
SMTP Gateways in addition to antivirus scanning within the Microsoft Exchange
environment. This protects against malicious code embedded within email
messages. The last line of defense should be configuring File System Real
Time Protection to scan all files when accessed or modified (the default
setting). Provided that definitions are current and that Heuristic scanning
is enabled, all files will be scanned for malicious code and cleaned or
quarantined as needed.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WARNING: The following solution is not recommended by Symantec as it allows
file attachments to be saved unencrypted on client computers.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you must reduce the amount of communication with the mail server, it is
possible to configure Symantec AntiVirus to cache file attachments locally.
This introduces a security risk, and is not recommended by Symantec. To
configure this function, edit the following value in the Windows registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Intel\LANDesk\VirusProtect6\CurrentVersion\Storages\MicrosoftExchangeClient\RealTimeScan
DWORD "MarkMessages"
Value:
0 = Do NOT mark MAPI email as scanned (default), scan each file access
request
1 = Mark MAPI email as scanned, prevent duplicate requests/scans by caching
attachments locally
