I am in the process of testing conversion from CRM 3.0 to CRM 4.0 and
want to know if it is possible to run both on the same server
concurrently.

I currently have a test CRM 3.0 set up and would like to install and
run CRM 4.0 in a second data base on the same SQL Server and Web
Server. Is this possible?

CRM uses Active Directory to link the users in and create security groups,
especially CRM3. I would not do this.

Not possible for a number of reasons, but the main one is that when you
start the installer for v4, it will realize that you have v3 installed and
will go down the upgrade path.

Hello,,
If this is a hardware necessity, you could install your v4 in a vm on your
server.
More generally, working with VM for test ...and production is a confort.

Concerning data migration, you could be interested by our Crm2Crm module
which moves data between servers independently from version, it solves the
sql language change not allowed by upgrade.
Its recent improvments followong a customer request allow updating existing
target entity objects based on the primary field and modification date.
