Sync CRM 3.0 Outlook Offline Client Via SSL

Can anyone tell me if you can sync CRM Outlook Offline Client via the
internet (SSL link) or do you have to use a VPN client to sync?

VPN is the only way I know of :(

Sad when you think how nice RPC over HTTPS is... We waited years for a good
Outlook sync, now we lose it because of CRM.
