I've been studying the CRM sdk and what I can do with it to fulfil our
requirements, and believe that I need to use the various callouts to fulfil a
requirement of automatically creating a note when an accounts' parent is
changed. I noticed in the sdk samples that a reference to
Microsoft.CRM.Callout is used, and as I'm using a development machine
separate from our CRM server, I can't just reference this assembly. Do i have
to copy these dlls locally to be able to reference them, or is there any
other way?

Yep, just copy the dll Microsoft.Crm.Platform.Callout.Base.dll to your
development machine and reference it. You can find it on your Crm cd in the
bin\Assembly folder.
