using AJAX with MCMS

This one is killing me so far.

I have an existing MCMS website that I want to add ASP.NET AJAX
function to. When I set up a page with an update panel, it will not
do an asynchronous postback if the edit console is on the page. If I
remove the edit console, all works as it should. Put the console back
on and the page does a full postback.

I tried using the code that Stefan posted a while back but that makes
no difference.

I can't be the only one running into this problem. If anyone has a
direction to point me, I'd really appreciate it.
