You don't need a driver for DOS to be able to access SATA drives.

Check the bios for bios level support.

Thats why you have to check bios support, most support emulating
a sata as an ide disk.

If your motherboard has integrated SATA ports, then they will (or can)
be configured to be emulated as IDE drives.

If you install a third-party SATA card, it will have it's own bios that
will be boot-strapped during system start-up and will (or should) allow
you to access it's own setup screens and (again) allow you to configure
the SATA drives to emulate IDE drives.

Win2K-pro?

Is there a non-pro version of Win2k?

And actually, during installation, both win2k and XP need help with SATA
drivers - you need to either feed them a floppy drive with the SATA
driver or insure that the SATA drives are in IDE-compatability mode
during installation and then after windows is up and running, install
the sata drivers at that point.

but are there any DOS drivers that allow DOS access to SATA drive when they
already have data on them? When I change BIOS to emulate IDE, I can't
access
any of the data on the drives until I switch back to SATA.

Having data on them is irrelavent. You must set the BIOS such that the
SATA controller is in IDE-compatibility mode.

Was the drive formatted as NTFS, or FAT-32?

If the drive was formatted as NTFS, then you won't be able to access
anything on the drive from DOS - doesn't matter if the drive is SATA or
a real IDE drive.

OK, but answer the question: The SATA drive that you have - was it
formatted as an NTFS drive, or as FAT-32 ???

It's very relevant since I can no longer access the data from Windows when
I switch to IDE mode.

I have a DOS driver for NTFS but I still need one for SATA.

That would only be the case if the drive was part of a RAID set.

Your biggest headache is being caused by the fact that the drive is
NTFS-formatted.

I don't know why anyone uses NTFS - except maybe for heavy-duty server
use. NTFS is waaaay over-rated as a file system for home or soho
desktop use. I run all my XP systems on FAT-32 volumes. It's really
cool to boot into DOS and be able to browse your XP drive in DOS, and
have FULL ACCESS to all files. The 4-gb file-size limitation of FAT32
is never an issue for me.

I suggest that you obtain Hiren's boot CD and use the tools on it to
examine your SATA drive when it's configured as an IDE drive. See if
your NTFS volumes are visible in that mode.

Your ultimate work-around would be to set the drive back to native SATA
mode, attach another drive to the system (but this time format that
drive as FAT-32), and then boot into XP and copy all the files you need
from the NTFS drive to the FAT-32 drive. Then shut the system down,
disconnect the NTFS drive and boot the system into DOS (use a boot
floppy if necessary, or make the FAT32 drive DOS-bootable during it's
initial preparation).

> I have a DOS driver for NTFS but I still need one for SATA.

You must like pain. Clone your NTFS volumes to a mirror set of FAT-32
volumes on a secondary drive and be done with it.

Is this SATA drive the only drive in the system?

If so, then switching from SATA to IDE mode in the bios would (I think)
prevent your system from booting XP, as XP would be loading 32-bit SATA
drivers as part of it's startup, and then it wouldn't find any SATA
drives attached to the system (because your SATA drive would appear as
an IDE drive).

You might be able to boot into safe mode, but I give that a 50:50
chance.

Wait a minute. Tom Lake said:

Who exactly is the OP for this thread?

Who is having a DOS-access issue with a SATA drive?

Is it Willard, or Tom Lake?

Willard wrote:

What is the size of the drive?

How many volumes or partitions does it have?

How is each volume formatted (FAT32 or NTFS) ?

Were the volumes formatted from a DOS environment, or from within
Win-XP?

Are you telling us that the SATA drive is USB connected? If that is the
case I think you'll need a USB storage driver for DOS.

I'm not but I did have a question that was relevant so I asked it in the
thread.
