I have a SBS 2003 SP! server. I am trying to add a USB 2.0 external drive
(WD MyBook Essential, 1.5TB) for backup purposes. When I attached the drive
it tried putting on the drivers, but the server froze.

When I restarted the server froze during the POST after finding the drive.
What can I do about it?

Hi:

This group is for very old editions of SBS. You may want to post SBS 2003
questions in the group:

microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs.

Now that that is out of the way, your issue is strange. No third party drivers
should be required for Windows to use a USB drive. From the age of the version
of SBS you have, I might guess that the USB ports are 1.0 rather than 2.0.
Have you used other USB drives on that server. USB 1 is 12 mbs, much to
slow for a satisfactory backup experience.

As far as restarting the SBS, have you unplugged the external drive? The
computer appears to be trying to start from the USB, and of course it won't.
You might also look in the BIOS to see if you can select the actual boot
drive rather than the USB.

I just purchased My Book Essentials. It is not compatible with SBS 2003. I
was told by their support technician that SBS2003 does not have the drivers
to run it. I read the box belatedly and it does not list the SBS 2003 as
compatible OS.
