Hi

I have a Windows 2000 DC (the old server) that I want migrate to Windows
2008 SBS 64 bit (new Dell server).

After the migration of the data, active directory and installation of the
apps onto the new server, I want to decommision the old one.

I want to keep the same windows domain name and rename the new server to the
old server name.

How do I do this? What is recommended?

I read that I have to run adprep /forestprep and adprep /domainprep with the
adprep utility from the windows 2008 dvd.

Being a 64 bit version of Windows 2008, is a 32 bit adprep supplied with the
dvd to be run on the windows 2000 server?

I am a bit worried about renaming the new DC with the name from the old DC,
I read many posts that suggest that there could be problems.

Can I install Windows 2008 on the new server with a different AD, then run
DCPROMO to remove active directory and than join the Windows 2000 domain?

Thanks in advance for any help

Hi:

You cannot rename a SBS server or domain, so you are right to be worried
about that.

To accomplish your goals, the best bet is a fresh install for say 10 to say
15 desktops or fewer, or the method worked out by MVP Jeff Middleton for
any size network to keep from having to disjoin and rejoin all the workstations
and keep the server name and so on the same.

Well worth the small cost of the swingit kit, and you get all the help you
need to migrate from old server to new server with all your information intact.

There are a few restrictions/blocks to this proceedure, so you will want
to discuss this with them before you make the plunge, but they are very helpful.
The biggest blocks are if the existing domain is single label, or if Exchange
is involved, if it was moved from Exchange 5.x to 2000 and kept a legacy
name space.

But if your domain does not have any of the blocks, it is the best way to
go to achieve your requirements.
