I am facing a problem while connecting the Windows 7 N Edition systems to
Windows 2008 Std Server Domain Controller. My WinXP Machines connect without
any problems, but when I change the settings at client end (changing from
Workgroup to Domain controller), it asks me for username and password, when i
enter the same, it takes sometime and give the following error,
----------------------------------------------------
The following error occurred attempting to join the domain "JNSERVER":
An attempt to resolve the DNS name of a domain controller in the domain
being joined has failed. Please verify this
client is configured to reach a DNS server that can resolve DNS name in the
target domain. For information about network
troubleshooting, see Windows Help.
----------------------------------------------------
Please help me what action should i take as its only giving the problem on
Windows 7 N systems and not on XP.
Thanks.

Hello Javed,

As DNS is involved in the error message please post an unedited ipconfig
/all from the DC/DNS server and the workstation.

Best regards

Hello Javed,

The output looks ok, on the client you can uncheck IPv6 on the NIC and try
again. Make sure no firewall is enabled either on the DC or the client.

See the following article for additional options, even it states Vista:

Dear Meinolf Weber

I tried unchecking the IPv6 and disabling the firewalls on both DC
and the client, but still I get the same error with no luck. Are there any
special treatment/installation to be done on the server or any special dns
zones to be created for this?

Thanks for feedback though.

Regards,
Javed

Hello Javed,

As you wrote Windows 7 N, which version is it Professional N or Ultimate
N? Home Premium N is not able to join a domain.
