Bought a new Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop, and had to re-install Windows and
consequently other programs (long, boring story) - BUT now Word (and Excel)
go through a configuration process every time I open them up. I know that's
not supposed to happen. How can I make it stop?

Wrong forum. This one if for the Microsoft Access program. Look for an
Office-specific forum.
