Report Width, why 23" not 11"

When I make a report from a query, the default action is to place everything in a row and I frequently end up with a report that's 23 inches wide.
Why does it do that? Then I need to move everything around, headers, footers, default graphics, change the width, etc.
Am I missing something, is there an easy why to make the report fit a normal 8.5"x11" page?
