Parents' Corner
1/25/2008
Many wonderful things are happening at the Met. One of them is that we now have an official School Site Council. The SSC will be meeting at the school, every 2nd Wednesday, at 6 p.m. unless otherwise announced. The meetings are open to all but only the elected SSC members will vote, when that is necessary. Typically this means a vote on election of officers, approving the minutes and so forth but it might also mean a vote on budget issues, etc. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend, as this is a great way to find out what is happening at the school. While you may not be able to vote, you can voice your opinions and be heard, which will affect voting. You can also introduce ideas you have, for making our school even stronger. Voting members include: Allen Young (principal), Manny Lara (classified), Vince Wolfe (advisor), Eliazar Dela Cruz (advisor), Jamilah Kirk(parent), Carol Deadman(grandparent), Robyn Cota Cann(parent/current chairperson), Alex Villagomez (student), Seetha Ream-Rao (student).
Upcoming activities discussed: monthly non-academic get togethers (such as a movie night), a Jr. Prom/Senior Ball (this spring?), graduation in June. PARENT HELP IS NEEDED. The old expression, “many hands make light work” is absolutely true If you would be willing to help will the above activities please call Robyn Cann at 747-5135, 456-5303 or email her at robyncann@comast.net. The winter celebration was so much fun because a few of us parents and students worked together. We felt rewarded by the time spent with students, new friendships, laughter. We need help to continue with these events however. There is no money available for decorations and food for example, but we can have potlucks and make our own decorations, recycle or each contribute just a little. A movie night with pizza, bingo night, etc. are not hard to do.
Student Projects
-Alex Villagomez will be discussing and asking for input for the architectural plan for a new Met facility (his senior project) Proposal given out, to be reviewed by attendees and to be discussed at the next SSC
-Seetha Ream-Rao is conducting a voter registration drive, which will occur on Jan. 26 and again on February 2. Teams of parents and students will canvas and attempt to register voters. This is also a fundraiser as each voter registered earns money. The funds will be used for the Student Resource Center which is being created at the school by students.
Recruitment and enrollment efforts are going well but we will need to continue to be proactive so that the school is serving students who want to be at school, rather than being “assigned” by the district. The number we are shooting for is 180 with the assumption that the number may drop as some students find that they need a different learning environment.
Make sure to check out the Student Union group as well.
