well, we didn't do so hot w/ Google's soc! just missed being accepted
as an org, then the Firefox/Metalink student was accepted but he chose
to go w/ MySQL (ouch! just bought for $1b. metalink funding: $0 ;)

I want to reward current members of the community, but also maybe draw
in some new blood...I'd like to offer 50 euro bounties for a few
things which hopefully wouldn't be too much work.

I was thinking we could discuss them here, see what people think. we
have a few ideas on

http://groups.google.com/group/metalink-discussion/web/gsoc08-ideas
http://groups.google.com/group/metalink-discussion/web/status-remaining-issues

I think if any of these were completed, they could have a big impact.

DownThemAll! - chunk checksum support so downloads can be fixed
Bouncer - Bram has already done a patch. perhaps we could get support
from OO.org & Mozilla to get this included
Fedora's MirrorManager - Fedora 9 comes out next week (13 May), so
probably too late...but it would be nice to have any time. Bram has
done some work on this as well.
curl/wget/axel - Tatsuhiro is working on a C parser but application
specific code will be needed for each.
Drupal module - someone contacted me about this but it would be 4-5
months before they could start. I don't know how useful it would be to
people.

Hi,

Its nice to see posts in this community again.

Friends, Please see the motive behind Google SOC, Its whole purpose is to encourage opensource development.Even if we missed being accepted as an organization Metalink is still an opensource project. Its only that Google will not be able to fund us. This should not effect our participation in OpenSource projects.Intuitively every student who joined this list is interested in Metalink. So, Lets pick up one project each and start working on it.

Advantages:
  • Take my word It surely increases your value to have an OpenSource development experience on your resume/CV.
  • It really changes your thought process. I'm practical example for this. I'm also a student and a newbie to opensource development. Now whenever I visit any opensource software page, I'm first visiting development page of it.When I use any opensource software I'm getting new ideas. And believe me its acting like a learning guide also. If I don't understand how certain feature is implemented I just download the source code and browse the sourcecode corresponding to that feature and read it. This completely changed my view towards software development.
  • Its very nice of Anthony Bryan, He is funding us. Though not as much as you would have got in GSOC. But here we have to appreciate his interest in motivating us to participate in development.
  • Last but not the least one is Experience you gain.
I'd like to work on "DownThemAll! - chunk checksum support ".  I feel this doesn't take much time. But I'm just leaving on my vacation. I'll finish this task as soon as possible just after I'm back from my vacation.

Hello, I am a student from China. I had applied for GSoC this year,
unfortunately, I was rejected. But I have a great interest in the
Opensource and I have just changed my operating system form Windows
to Linux. The network programming interests me a lot, so I want to do
some work about it. My summer holiday will begin on July so I don't
have enough time at the moment, I want to do it after July and is it
OK?

that is more than ok, come & get involved at any time! we'd be excited
to have you, & as you can see there are a number of open source
programs that are involved with or related to metalink.

to update the earlier project list, I think Nils is going to add chunk
checksum support to DTA himself, altho he would be excited about other
contributors to DTA!
