Hi,

I will be in Kerala this weekend and was wondering if we can do a
debian event during my stay there. I can take debian packaging
sessions on Sunday if there is a lab available. It would be good if
there is some volunteers to cover basics of free software, gnu/linux,
command line and debian on Saturady. If is it close to Palakkad
(Malappuram, Thrissur or Kozhikode), it would be convenient for me.

Let me know if anyone is keen on doing this.

You have to keep reminding your government that you don't get your
rights from them; you give them permission to rule, only so long as
they follow the rules: laws and constitution.

it'll be a good idea to hold a session. we have a large no. of keen junior students here at M.E.S interested in open source and free software and a debian event could really spike their interest.

i can handle a session on basic command line features and shell scripting.

let's fix a location and get the pieces moving.

Thanks!

Haris has suggested his home as an option. Coordinate with him and fix
a place soon.

Cheers

If people bring their own laptops (or two people can share one laptop)
and we have a local mirror, we can manage. But yes a lab would be
convenient.

Sajith Sir, can we arrange this session in our multimedia lab? It can be a final hoorah before our batch leaves. :-)

Yes, let's do it in the lab itself.

I'll fetch the necessary approvals.  I'll be here this weekend anyway.

Warm Regards,
Sajith

Great Praveen. We'll meet this weekend. You could stay with me at Thrissur.

Awesome! All of you rocks!

So, on the first day people who are new to GNU/Linux should get some
basics. You can rope in Ershard also if you like. I would like the
following topics covered (tweak it as per your audience).

1. An Introduction to Free Software, SMC, MES-FSUG etc if many people
are new to Free Software
2. Basic command line usage
3. Managing software installations apt-get, synaptic, software center
etc discuss how is it different from installing software on Windows
4. Installing software from source, take a package like lekhonee-gnome
or gnash which will fail at configure step normally :)
5. Introduction to Debian - philosophy, project functioning,
elections, membership etc

On Sunday I will take packaging sessions.

We can use this wiki for coordination
http://wiki.debian.org/DebianIndia/DebianUtsavam2012

It was a beautiful event, hoping to see a few more people start
maintaining packages. More importantly, I think people grasped the Free
Software philosophy in depth.
