So I'm all excited to try out my new printer. Got the print head installed last night. I go to change a few settings in the firmware, Sprinter.... and now It wont' upload. It just sits there. comment says its uploading, but it never finishes...
I'm starting to think I shouldn't have gotten into this at all. I've spent over $1000 and it doesn't work. WTF?
I suspect you are using version 1.0 or higher of the arduino IDE to try and upload the firmware. I suggest you download version 0.22 or 0.23 and use that instead. This is a stupid yet known bug with reprap firmware and arduino IDE 1.0+

This usually happens when you have the wrong board selected in the
drop-down menu. If you have "Arduino Mega 2560" selected try making it
"Arduino Mega 1280" instead.

Thanks for the suggestions. I am using .23. I ran into the issue of 1.0 not working before. .23 worked last week. I know its working right too, because I"m able to connect to it through pronterface. and control the printer. I cannot get my print head to heat up though. So thats is why I'm trying a different setting in the firmware.

Should I see some flashing lights or somthing during the upload? because I don't. All I see is a steady green light on the aurdino board. No lights on Ramps.

It is almost certainly what Eric said-- the wrong Arduino selected in the
IDE. Make sure you have either the Arduino Mega 2560 or 1280 selected, and
if it doesn't work with one, try the other. One of the two should fix the
problem.

Ok, I verified it was on Mega 2560. That didn't work. I also tried the 128. No luck. How long should it take to upload the firmware. Usually it goes pretty quick. but for some reason, its not working now.
I also tried the reset button on Ramps. When I press it, there is a small green light near the D10 connection that flashes twice, then goes dark.
I also compiled the sprinter code, and it says "Done compiling"
I've tried re installing the arduino software and drivers.
Also, I connected my hot end to D10 on the board. and I connected the thermistor to T0 In pronterface. the thermistor is reading 0 and I can't get the hot end to turn on...

Have you got another machine you can try? Maybe dual boot into Linux?
I had a heck of a time getting my sangiunololu to play nicely on one
machine...I swapped to another and it did fine, as well as trying a Linux
box. Pronterface works great on the machine I cant program on. Of course,
I had 1.0 IDE on it from earlier ardiuno projects, but I suspect the when I
installed the 023 IDE, 023 continued to use the later AVRdude layer, which
caused my issue. On a "virgin" machine, all is well!

Unfortunately No, I don't have access to another computer at home. Is there any way to remove the 1.0 install stuff completely?
What is weird is, It was working last week. All I did between then and now was install the print head and Print Thermistor. Which I still can't turn on.
I can turn the heat bed on, but not the print head.

If so, connect the meter leads to the thermistor leads. It doesn't matter
which lead of the meter connects to which lead of the thermistor, it will
work either way.
Set the meter to read at least 100K ohms. 200Kohms is better.
Note the reading of the thermistor. It should be anything other than zero.
Now, put your finger on the thermistor, and leave it there a bit. see if
the reading changes. It should, as the thermistor reads your skin
temprature. If it doesn't, or it reads zero, then you either have a faulty
thermistor, or your wiring is suspect.
I know that doesn't help you with your upload issue, but it might help you
eliminate some possible issues with your machine.
I haven't tried to completely remove the 1.0 IDE from my "problem" machine
yet. You might try the arduino site, and check the forums there...surely
one of those guys will know.
Don't give up on it, you are so close now, and I can promise you that the
first print will make it all worth the frustration!!

That solves the print head issue. You were right. I checked the thermistor and it was making a bad connection at the connector. I had to solder the wire to the pin. Now it reads the print head and it is heating up too! Thank you!

I have every rev of the arduino IDE on my PC with no issues - delete the

Being I am a newb, I have heard that you can write firmware values to the
Ramps/sanguinololu using certain "M" commands...anyone confirm this? If
so, Randerman, you might be able to make the adjustmenst you need that way
until you get the upload issue solved...

I find on my sanguinololu, i sometimes have to unplug the +12v power
(leaving only USB plugged in) to get a sucessful flash. Might be worth
trying this?
Or try with just the arduino, with the RAMPS shield removed completely.

Agree with Bob... try with only USB connected
Make *sure* you have the correct COM selected
As far as the print itself goes, it looks like z steps/mm are off badly.
(I assume that is the "standard" 20x20x10mm test cube?)
What leadscrews for z are you using? And, what is your z steps/mm value?

Larry, Actually it was a 20x20x20 test cube. and the picture was only half finished. I did print a complete one. x and y were slightly over at 20.05mm but the z axis which was supposed to be 20, came out over 33mm tall. -Need to change the z axis height for sure!
As for the flash issue. I tried what Bob suggested. I unplugged the power source and removed the ramps board. -only thing plunged in is the usb cable. I can now see the green power light is on, and red receive light flashes once in a while during upload. Still never finishes. the transmit light never blinks either...

Just for grins, try this. When you click the upload button, the IDE
compiles the code first.
Try hitting the reset button on your arduino board while the code is
compiling. It might not help, but then again, it might. I have one Uno
that for whatever reason will not accept a sketch unless I reset it right
before the upload starts, while it is compiling...
