I think it's a stupid idea.

I don't like it much either. It's too negative. I know what they're trying to do, but think we should be focusing on getting people on bikes, not into their cars.

How should we respond to people trying to get us to promote it on FB and Twitter?

Sorry, I must have missed some important info here...

Is someone proposing a Drive To Work Day?
Who are they & who are they auspiced by?
Why? Is it a piss-take or a serious campaign?

cheers
J :)

You mean this? Looks like a good publicity idea (note the date).

So if it actually got people driving their cars (assuming you own a
car), how would anybody notice? Supposedly because of loads of
traffic congestion? There's always congestion. Nobody would notice.
It think it's an even more silly idea than ride to work day. What
would be better than ride-to-work-day? Ride to work every day! How
could the BUG help with that? Mentors/buddys to help newbies find the
best route, how to handle difficult intersections etc. Anyone
interested in that idea?

Seems an odd way to make their point.

Doesn't even say what day they think it should happen! (or at least it's not obvious)

Ride To Work Every Day? Love it!

It could be a mini campaign getting people to write letters to Edward O'Donahue (or their local MP), telling them what they would like fixed on their ride to work.

Or alternatively, we could get people to write to US and we would then send the info on. That would give us the advantage of having the information as a basis for future campaigning.

Whether we have the time or resources to do this is another issue.

I much prefer R2W Everyday!

If we are going to offer assistance then I think that as well as mentoring new riders, now is a good time to prepare fair weather riders for the end of daylight saving (riding in reduced light conditions) and wet weather riding hazards. (yes, I know that we have had unseasonal rain, but autumn- spring is when riders are more likely to face wet weather).

Let's face it - given the daily fluctuations of how many people drive, no one will be able to measure a 2% increase in the number of cars on the roads due to cyclists all driving - assuming a 100% participation rate among cyclists, which aint gonna happen either. Driving cars to spite car drivers is just negative and pointless.

The American Cascade Cycling Club, which put out a press release on april fools day as a joke seemed to have a better grasp of this than this rather silly facebook group.

This is from the Cascade Bicycle club release:

Increases in the number of people who walk, bicycle and ride transit are contributing to a decline in driving that, if continued, would one day make cars scarce on our roads. Our citizens, as well, may shrink in size and become gradually healthier. Something must be done to curb excessive fitness, as increased life expectancies would further tax our broken Social Security system.

Cascade Bicycle Club would like to ask Americans to renew their commitment to driving by leaving their bus passes or bicycles at home. If the cost of parking or gas is a burden, employees may request that their employers help offset those costs by participating in Jurassic Petroleum’s Drive to Work Day.
