Can anyone recommend any really special places I can go and photograph?
Although I've lived here all my life, I can honestly say I have never seen ALL of Melbourne, and I'm hoping some of you can suggest some places that I may not know about.
To show my friend the 'real' Melbourne, I want to do a series of photos :
The cafe scene
Arts, museums and theatres
Parklands
Industrial
Old Melbourne
New Melbourne etc
Even Vic country, as long as it can be a day trip.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Or alternatively, if any one has pictures / photos that you would consider sharing would be great.
Many thanks,
Ronnie

I think there are probably enough pics of Melbourne on websites to cover
your needs. A couple of hours in front of your computer might save you a
lot of leg work. On the other hand I'd recommend that you get out of your
chair and go visit all the places people recommend. Melbourne has so much
to see. Head down to the Ripponlea/Elsternwick area for lots of old
mansions built with gold rush money in the 1850's. The City of Glen Eira
website has a bit of info about the historic properties online at

Buy postcards. You can see what the photo will look like before you buy
it, and you can usually find really good shots of the most scenic
locations. This is a good way to get good pictures when you are
travelling too.
Of course there is a potential problem of copyright, but it depends on what
you plan to do with the pictures. You could just snail mail the postcards
to your friend and then there is no problem; not as high tech but easy.

> Hi Ronnie,
While showing the 'real' Melbourne, I'd also try to give the person something that is different to what he is used to. (ie forget St Pauls, as lovely as it is)..Footy at the
MCG, from the Southern Stand, at night if possible.
(+ people all over the ground after the game, a unique thing)
People jogging along the Yarra.. near the boats sheds, young rowers (male and female)getting ready to go out - all within a stones throw of the city proper.
Interior of the Arts Centre - all that plush red decoration, Aussie paintings, brass fittings, yet anyone can just walk in.
Botanic Gardens of course - or Fitzroy Gardens
The Markets top of Elizabeth Street
Outside of Melbourne, other than Great Ocean Rd., - Sorrento restaurant at the boat ramp.
Some bathing boxes?
Mansfield or Bright - maybe a postcard of the what is it called? The Man from Snowy River race?
held at Sheepyard flats, nr Mansfield.
Wilsons Prom, and Gippsland scenery like at Cape Conran (National Park)
I'm told Werribee Park is very popular with Japanese folk.
Historic Houses like Como and Ripponlea I really love, but men don't always agree!
That's all for now,
Di Allen
Not really. There are people all over the ground after the cricket
in the West Indies.
And during.

Thanks,
I have received quite a number of private e-mailed suggestions, and the response has been great. Many thanks to all, and Di, you have made some really great suggestions.
I don't normally sit at home over the weekends, but do get around, and try to see this unique state we live in.
My original request was perhaps to remind me of places I had overlooked, or forgotten, and most definitely I can not claim to know all of Melbourne, and was depending on perhaps the 'locals' of their area to suggest views that aren't normally advertised in brochures or tour guides.
I have already provided my friend the sites of tourist information and Vic tourism, and I must admit I was a bit disappointed with the pictures - we have so much more to show and offer, and the pictures on these sites are just a small few of the many thousands we could be 'showing off'. I know they are limited, and that's why I wanted to take pictures of my own.
In the past on my many drives, I had never bothered to take a camera with me to take snaps, and now that I want to, I don't know where to start. I am proud of where I live, and I wanted to show the side of Melbourne, and Victoria that you can't get in books and brochures.
The bathing boxes, and restaurant at the ramp is what I would like to capture, as are street scenes - one person e-mailed me with the thought of photographing a street around the corner where she lived because at this time of the year is was magical - and it was - I nearly used a whole roll of film on the wonderful display of autumn shades in a tree lined street, with scattered leaves across the footpath and nature strip with the city views at the end of the treed tunnel. Not a scene generally noted in brochures.
Another person suggested standing on the pedestrian bridge at the Austin and taking photos towards Doncaster and the hills beyond. This is the type of thing I was after. Locals suggesting scenes that they encounter day to day and are worth being photographed.
And sure, there are certainly some views I could never photograph myself, and would perhaps take the suggestion of post cards - to fill in the spaces.
Once again, thanks, and I know I'll be kept quite busy visiting the many places people have suggested.
Ronnie.
