Fake streets in UBD street directory

That supplementary magazine in The Age yesterday (the one full of ads
for watches and clothes you'll never be able to afford), had a little
article about the Melway - lots of interesting facts. It mentioned that
UBD released directories with fake streets scattered throughout, so
that they could know when other directories had copied them instead of
doing their own cartography.

I'd heard of this practice before, but hadn't heard of any Melbourne
examples until now.

Does anyone know what the fake streets were called? Or where they were?

Sut beriously, I do have an old UBD but they just are simply not as good as
the Melway(s).

Did you buy it at Myers?

Yes.

Melway at home and a little Gregorys one when out.

The former is too bulky to cart everywhere.

Isn't the UBD supposed to be the official AFL directory due to a sponsorship
deal?

Why? We bought a UBD one recently. It cost about the third of the price
of a Melway. Comparing it with the Melway that it replaced, I can't see
anything about it that would make it an inferior product.

So when someone tells you to meet them on map 68 F5, what do you do? :-)

Good grief. Other than so money can exchange hands, why would there be an
official AFL street directory?

I suppose it would depend on which brand of street directory you are using.
Lets see which one will it be Melways, Gregory's or UBD?
I've grown up using Melways. I've had a look at the others and for some strange
reason just didn't like the style/layout of the maps.

I have to admit it has been a long time since I have seen a UBD. I looked
at one today and they are MUCH much better than they used to be. In fact
their maps look a lot like those in the Melway...hmmm...so who's afraid of
being copied? ;-)

If they really are that much cheaper I would certainly consider using them
in the future.

I wouldn't. I'd say that we'd meet at such and such street. Or, if I
were to give a map reference, I'd specify which book it comes from. They
both have indexes and lists of streets. So, it wouldn't be too hard for
them to figure out where to go, if they aren't familiar with the area in
question.

I've compared. Not impressed with the UBD.

Just try to get public transport route info out of it, for instance. There's
that and heaps of other stuff that Melway has but the others don't.

Probably not, just winding him up :-)

But a lot of people do offer Melway references with addresses to businesses,
parties etc.

Which is still no good if people don't have a current edition as quite often
the map refs change with each new edition.

No they don't. At least, some regional maps changed a few years ago, but
Melbourne and suburbs have always been consistent. Map 68 (my map) in 1970
is the same map 68 today.

This is both a curse and a blessing for Melway: consistency is very good,
but it's led to the problems with the maps all being jumbled up as the
coverage has expanded, so moving east to west, you jump around in the
directory.

I've yet to find a ref to the Yellow Brick Road in any of them, and I do
so want to get to Emerald City <sigh> (yes, of course you too Toto).

You'll have to do better than that, Daniel. There are some things that
wind me up. UBD/Melway map references isn't one of them...

Dunno, but it's confirmed here:

Naomi Klein's 'No Logo' (which I'm reading now) gives a good explanation of
these sorts of unconventional marketing/sponsorship deals.

older Melways did list it as 'White Brick Road', but that was before Toto
got there.

I chucked out my old Melways and today bought a UBD. I came home to find my street was wider, bigger and
clearer, with nice big trees planted down each side. Not only that but my house had been renovated!
