Some methods require an accept-charset header to receive non latin encodings. Try the following and see if that helps  http://www.meetup.com/meetup_api/docs/#encodings

I found a post on 11/2012 saying that is was not supported, but wasnt sure if there were any updates of late.

Plus, this is my second posting - wasnt sure if the first one made it out.
