That talk (given in 2006) quickly became famous. As Peter Flom
remarked, relatively few substantive points were made, but the
dynamic graphics and, above all, Rosling's dynamic participation,
make a most vivid and memorable impression! One must appreciate
that, while the software offers many vivid effects, it is his
very active participation -- to the point of appearing to push
the demonstration around with his own hands, like a performer
juggling many balls -- that really carries the message. The
dynamic display, in reality, is the infrastructure for Rosling's
performance!
Rosling, as I understand, developed his owm software (which puts
a GUI with all sorts of selectors and sliders on top of a hidden
spreadsheet). This was initially freely available, but later
purchased by Google. It is calloed Trendalyzer [sic]. Rosling
developed in withing his "Gapminder Foundation" (see the talk for
the background to that name).
See http://www.ted.com/speakers/hans_rosling.html for a general
overview of Rosling's TED talks and background.
There is a website http://www.gapminder.org/ but the "DOWNLOADS"
button leads you only to downloadable videos, not to the software.
A cut-down version is available as a Google Gadget called the
Google Motion Chart.
I have been unable to discover how one may obtain a full copy of
Trendalyzer for one's own use (or, indeed, whether it is possible).
