At time of development the only way to connect the XBox 360 to a UPnP
server, was to have a service that is only found on Microsoft services
(used for registering for DRM content) and for the server itself to be
claimed to be made by microsoft. Legal would not allow us to pretend
to be microsoft (although there are other servers out there that do).

I can get my XBox to see Google Media Server, but then it gives me the
8 digit Media Center Extender code to plug into Media Center and I
can't get pass that step.
Any thoughts?

Actually, when I goto Video it shows my computer, but then gives me an
error saying it can't connect. Tells me to make sure this console is
activated with my computer.

Don't select the "Windows Media Centre" option, instead go to one of
the Music, Videos, or Pictures options, and press the blue X button to
change source. It should list the UPnP server there.
Well, I just get to see that no servers exist... I can test connection
and everything is OK until PC Select.
There are no serving PC's.. this is no firewall problem, since I can
see my PC when using WMP 11 (which sucks for serving HD stuff and non
WMP media)
I just copy pasted that xml on the wiki posted above and replaced the
xml inside the xml file on my C drive with it (after backup).
However, my serial isnt 8 digits "dash" 4 digits... but 7 digits
"dash" 5 digits..
I tried both ways (just moved the dash one to the right so it was 8-4
again). but none of em work :S
I guess I am doing something wrong.. any thoughts??

Update:
I changed the XML file the wrong way.. one must use the original XML
setup, and edit the values. Don't use the XML from the wiki posted
above, just use their values..
However. now I can see my Google Media Server.. I can't use it.. When
I try to connect it sais that I might have some firewall problems..
Do I have to update the serviceList inside the XML too ?? My thoughts
are that when I do that, I screw up the google media server..
Does someone have his GMS working with Xbox360 yet?? If so please post
your XML file so other people can use it.

I have the same problem now; I edited the xml so my pc now shows as
GMS on the 360 but when I try to connect nothing happens.
Anyone have any ideas?
Also on a side note, google desktop/gms hasn't found/indexed any
videos on my pc for some reason; only pictures and music. I installed
it 2 days ago so it has had ages to trawl through my pc and my video
folder is not excluded from the indexing settings...

I think there's something wrong with our XML... since nobody else
reported this not-working..
Also it's strange that so much news-sites wrote that GMS is working
with PS3 and Xbox360..
My opinion is that GMS is still in alpha phase.. the server itself
might be working fine.. but the setup and options are too limited..
also the connecting part is bad...
However, Google said that they would use our comments and they are
trying to release a new version verry soon. Lets hope so :)
And about the lack of movies indexed.. for some reason the indexing
service doesn't index everything :s
Quote Google Media team:
"We are looking at all your feedbacks and will fix issues you discover
in the next binary push (hopefully very soon)
- thanks a lot to all of you!!!
Regarding local folders you see or do not see via media server, our
idea was to make initial state
of the server usable but still preserve users ability to control
content.
We were thinking that you could control location Google Desktop
indexing via its configuration.
Please take look at your GD settings and add missing directory there.
Indexing has some delay however ...
-- Media Server Team"
Well, I searched the whole GD settings menu, but there is no way to
add the missing directory..
Can someone please explain to me what I'm doing wrong? I thought the
whole idea with Google Desktop was to index the whole PC, so it's easy
to search for files...
Well right now.. it obviously is not, and the index status is 100%...

Yes I got it working now :)
For some reason my options menu wasn't working properly. After re-
indexing my PC it did work properly and now I added the movies
folder..
thx :)
Now just fix the XMl file :p

So have you got the videos to play on the xbox, i.e. are you still
having the firewall problems. If so make sure you have added the
google app as a trusted application to your windows firewall.

Well no, I can add see the video's in the desktop tab now..
However, My 360 still cannot connect to the server.. It sais it cant
connect and a firewall might be the problem..
However, my personal firewall, and the windows firewall, are both set
the right way, and the 360 can see the server.. so it is realy
there... but connecting gives trouble..
I'll just wait till the next version of GMS... hopefully they added
proper Xbox360 functionality :)

hmm, looks like microsoft really didn't follow any standard in
implementing upnp in the xbox360, while editing the xml file allows
the xbox360 to display media-server as a source, the other functions
are not working.

well since the GMS cannot pretend to be microsoft for legal reasons
than why can't GMS just make it easy for us to hack it so that it can
play nice with the 360, since Microsoft has a tendency to limit
compatibility with products like the 360.

Well, if you're using windows xp or vista, you can easily connect to
your PC with an xbox 360 to get videos in wmv and xvid / divx and
music.
It works fine, you just need windows media player 11, and the service
enabled.
Why bother with this?
If it were running on linux or if the MS software to do this were like
internet explorer then fine, I could see the logic for wanting it, but
you
can hardly worry about using MS software if you've got windows and an
xbox 360 :)
