Job Description: Midwest Research Institute has an opening for an Associate Scientist - Clinical Services to perform research studies to investigate phenotypes and functions of human T-cell and monocyte subsets, host/pathogen mechanisms that regulate innate immunity and immune activation, and mechanisms of immunopathogenesis. Help coordinate research collaborations with other labs through correspondence, reagent acquisition or shipments, and participating in meetings with investigators from other labs to discuss protocols and data and coordinate joint experiments.
Research Duties include: * Isolation of PBMC and T-cell subsets from non-human primate peripheral blood. * FACS analysis and cell sorting. * In vitro functional assays using primary T-cells and macrophages. * Perform in vitro studies to investigate mechanisms of immunopathogenesis. * DNA and RNA purification, real-time PCR. * SDS-PAGE, Western blots, immunoprecipitation, FRET assays to study protein-protein interactions. * ELISA assays, viral plaque assays, and clinical chemistry. Prepare cell cultures and virus stocks. * Work in Biohazard Facility Level 4 upon completion of required training.
General Lab Duties include: * General lab organization and maintenance. * Maintain cell line, plasmid, freezer, and reagent inventories. * Prepare packages for shipment; maintain lab cell lines, supplies, common lab stocks, and lab equipment.
Computer Skills: * Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Photoshop. * Prepare figures for publications and presentations. Qualifications * MS preferred in molecular biology, biochemistry, virology, or immunology and minimum 3 years lab experience including cell culture, molecular biology, and cellular immunology. Extensive experience with FACS analysis required. * Experience with fluorescent microscopy preferred. * Excellent interpersonal skills, excellent oral and written communication and organizational skills, ability to work independently, design experiments, and analyze data. * The candidate will work in a BSL4 facility and will be required to pass physical exams and participate in vaccination programs. * The successful candidate(s) will be required to undergo one or more U.S. Government background investigations in conjunction with the job requirements and responsibilities. Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States, and not be a Restricted Person under the criteria as defined within the USA Patriot Act. * The candidate will report to the Clinical Laboratory Services Manager.
