Friends – I saw this on the Lockeland listserv today and felt compelled to send a little something. If you have a little room in your budget, I hope you will send a sympathy card and/or a little help for this poor mother’s funeral costs. I hope you are all well and that, like in our family, your children are safe and healthy.

Elizabeth

Received this sad request today. No contribution is too small.

Yesterday afternoon, we received a call from the mother of a young man with

very extreme cerebral palsy. This mother gave up her career to provide

full-time care for her severely disabled son for all of his twenty-four

years. They lived a meager existence; as his needs were costly, and

Tennessee has no governmental services to assist families of young people

with certain forms of developmental disabilities. Sadly, her son just passed

away.

She has no money for a funeral. An area funeral home is holding his body. We

have talked with the funeral home and they are willing to work with her to

provide discounted services. She has asked if we can assist in paying for

the cost of a small service with a cremation.

This doesn't exactly fit into UCP's existing programs and services

categories, but it is in many ways typical of the unmet needs we are

confronted with every day. We know that times are difficult for everyone,

but these are particularly hard times for many of the families UCP is

serving. We try to keep a small reserve that we can use for these

situations, but this fund is essentially depleted. Any gift, no matter how

small, can give us the resources to help families undergoing the most

unimaginable trials. Contributions can be sent to UCP at the address below.

Matters.

We also appreciate any ideas about other possible sources of support you can

send our way as we seek to help this grieving mother.
