The DNA test I took back in 2004 linked Sampson McCown to the Francis and John McCown line as well as the six brothers line. But we don't know exacxtly how. We have had much speculation about who Sampson's father was, but I have yet to see convincing evidence.

I took the 12 marker DNA test back in 2004 and there was an exact match to Mike McCown and others of the Francis McCown line. I am descended from Sampson McCown (b. 1775).

 

Subsequently, a Mr. McCune (can't remember his first name) who is descended from one of the six brothers took the test and there was an exact match to me and to the Francis McCown descendants.

 

The problem remains that we still don't know for sure who Sampson McCown's father was. I have yet to see convincing evidence.

Yes, Steve, it is Dr. Todd William McCune, and his line goes back to George
McCown, b. 1710, Co. Tyrone, Ireland, and was son of Rev. Alexander McCown,
Sr. If you compare the Y-DNA of Todd, and my uncle, who has tested, you can
see the matches. My uncle has done the 67 marker test, and Todd has done the
37 marker test. They are off one marker. We could use someone from your
branch to test too, just to see how the comparisons go. By going through the
Group on Family Tree DNA in Houston, the fewest marker test is $99. Of
course these can always be upgraded to the other tests on the same sample.

Hi Leonard:

At this point I might agree on the Alexander and wife Elizabeth (I have
never seen any evidence Elizabeth was a Moore but it is widely stated).
He is the one that died about 1802-ish in Chester SC. Since the wife
outlived him I would feel a birth date of 1713 might be somewhat too
early or else she would be much younger than he. If he was born 1713 he
would be about 80 or approaching 80. 80 is reasonable but most people of
that time did not live that long. I sense he may have been somewhat
younger than 80.

The next generation would be John, called Major John, in the records. He
would be the father of Sampson. If Sampson was born about 1775 John had
to have been born 20-25 years earlier or about 1750-55.

If John were born 1750-55 I would expect Alexander to be born more like
1725-30. I have a guy named John coming down from Pennsylvania in 1756
to Chester County. Maybe Alexander and John of Pennsylvania are
brothers? I am studying each of the McCowns lands in Chester County. I
believe the land sold by Sampson McCown when he went to TN to be a part
of the same grant patented to John of Pennsylvania.

Right now I am now working on a couple projects that are taking a lot of
time-I am trying to identify all (or as many as possible) of the Free
People of Color in Texas prior to the Civil War. I also have been
working with the William Walker papers of the soldiers and citizens of
Nicaragua who were there under Walker in the 1850's.

THEN, I can get back to a project I was working on trying to identify
and plat out the McCown lands in Chester County, SC. I already have done
a lot of the work. Just need to complete the research and finish up.

There are two to three McCown enclaves of McCown properties in Chester
County plus some in the adjoining county. People in Chester claim they
are different unrelated families. I hope my project will prove out the
answer when I can finish it. If we had participants in the DNA program
from each of the different McCown families in SC it would sure help
backing up whatever my study will find.

Hi Mic, It sounds as though you have a plate full to overflowing. I am
very interested in the outcome of your plating of the various lands of the
several unrelated McCown families in Chester Co., SC. Although the 1790
census doesn't give me much reason to hope for a connection with my McCowns,
at this point I can't find an earlier ancestor than Lawrence McCown, born
somewhere in South Carolina ca 1790-92. So far, I have gone to the extremes
of upgrading to 67 markers, SNP deep subclade test, joining the Ulster
Heritage Group and retaining Barry McCain of the UHG for one year to see
what he can find about our family history.

Because of very strong Maguire, McGuire, McManus results at 25, 37 and 67
markers, I have also joined the Colonial Maguire Surname Group and McManus
Surname Group while retaining my McCown Surname Group. At 67 markers there
are 9 matches with Maguire family related surnames all of which are common
in Fermanagh and Cavan Counties in Ulster. According to Barry McCain these
Maguire/McManus matches are certainly in the ruling Maguire family line. So
far, there are no McCown matches beyond 12 markers, one 12/12 match is a
known cousin who has only been tested to 12 markers as of today and two
11/12 matches, tested to 37 markers but who differ wildly from my results at
25 and 37 markers.

As near as I can tell from the ysearch McCown page, www.ysearch.org/, and
from reading every one of the recent McCown Family History Rollcall e-mails,
it looks like the Francis and John McCown descendents together with the
descendents of George McCown of the six brothers have very close Y-DNA
matches. Then there are the rest of us which appear to be from non-related
McCown lines. This would include my line together with Sam McCown, another
line for Bob McCown, one for Nancy McCowan O'Bannon and one for Thomas Ashby
McCown. That would make a minimum of five apparently non-related McCown
lines out of 21 McCowns tested to date. Is a puzzlement.

Hi James,  I don't know if the 67 marker upgrade would help with the issue of Sampson unless at least one other male descendent also was tested to at least 37, but very much better if both were tested at 67 markers.  I am biased of course but count my blessings every day that Barry McCain of the Ulster Heritage Group was very adamant that I upgrade from 37 to 67 markers.  Not only did I comply but also paid for the upgrade of a closely matching Maguire who has terrific medical bills and a short life expectancy.  That quid pro quo paid off handsomely for both of us genealogically, and I gained a new friend who I wish I'd met years ago. 

 

The staff at FTDNA bent over backwards to get his upgrade underway and added him to the Ulster Heritage Group as well.  I can see that he matches me at 25, 37 and 67 markers and I can read the actual results at www.ulsterheritage.com/ by using their DNA Project link and then their DNA Results link.  I urge you to view the results of not only the McCown family groups (Francis) and then all other McCowns except mine.  Mine are shown under Mag Uidhir II (Maguire Group II).  This is a trip that Leonard is also involved in and I don't believe that any McCowns should be left behind.

 

Not only did the 37 marker matches hold up at 67 markers but the total number of matches increased as well at 25, 37 and 67 markers.  That only happened because my DNA Matches on my FTDNA personal page is set to show all matches regardless of surname.  Fortunately I got a cluster of related surnames.
