Dear All,

question about weld process use,
WPS & PQR Based on two process with back-chip and welding

as in PQR Process use in root SMAW and subsequent SAW and back chip with SMAW weld.
in this case can we use SAW PROCESS for back welding? FOR production weld?

What is the welding code for the PQR you have qualified?

According to ASME sec 9 removing of backing Nd change in backing not allowed it is essential variable but addition of backing is allowed.you r qualified with smaw as backing if u use saw as backing it is not allowed it means u r changing backing and in process u qualified on that process is to be used as backing for another process u HV to again do qualification.

according to section 9, deletion of backing & joint design are non-essential variable, Refer QW 402.1 & 402.4. So there is no issue.
However in SAW, you need to have backing material either as removable backing strip or permanent backing to hold the high heat & weld penetration. in thumb rule, the depth of penetration in SAW is 0.1 X 100 amp for square butt and 0.7 X 100 amp for Y groove welds.

In your case, you have to make separate WPS based on your PQR for SAW only, which should clearly state the applicable proper joint configuration & welding pass sequence.

Thanks & regards

Thanks

Is it ok if we use in backing first Run with SMAW AND further subsequent Saw weld?

Can you provide me any clause of sec-9 acceptance or non acceptance.
 Regards

Yes you can use. infact its industrial practice to have TIG/ SMAW/ GMAW root run and hot pass with a sufficient throat thickness which is followed by SAW welding.
