Dear experts,

what is the difference in ASTM and ASME material. what care should be taken while reviewing MTC, and lab testing.
when can we say this material is acceptable as per ASTM OR ASME?

Nowdays asme specification material are more in trends. Basically asme adopted aatm material ie in asme sec 2 part a. B there is one line this material is similar to astm specification..
All testing are same. Prop are also same u can call it also dual specification.

There is a difference at first glance, the ASTM materials start with A, for example A36, when they are ASME, the name starts with SA, for example SA-36, the S indicates that that material specification was adopted by ASME, but if you compare a material A36 Vs SA-36, the chemical composition and physical properties are the same, another big difference that we can see is that not all ASTM materials are ASME materials, that is, the ASTM list of materials is much larger than the list of ASME materials (Table QW-422), since the list of ASME materials, are materials whose purpose is the manufacture of boilers and pressure vessels.
Regards!.

Not all ASTM materials are qualified as per ASME standards.
Each ASME standard accepts ASTM materials based on the application.

ASTM is the originator of materials specifications . ASME adopted the ASTM grades for Boiler and Pressure Vessel Industries. In the process of acceptance and adoption some material were accepted as is , some were modified to suit design and application requirements in BPV environments.

Each ASME specification at the very beginning tells what’re the differences between this ASME Grade vs the original ASTM grade.

On receipt of materials one should try to match the MTC to the PO requirements and the technical specifications, as sampled below. If the P.O indicates ASME but the vendor supplies ASTM grade, then at least a “Certificate of Conformance”  should be expected at the point of acceptance.

Thanks.

For additional explanation and examples of acceptable material see ASME Section II, Part A, Mandatory Appendix II, Basis for Use of Acceptable ASME, ASTM, and Non-ASTM Editions.  The examples delineated in II-200 (d) may be of some help.  Note that Table II-200-1 lists the construction code acceptability and editions (year) of ASTM specifications that are acceptable.

Also note, SA- and SB-, materials are those for which ASME Section II, Part D, code allowable stresses have been determined.

Enjoy.

Dear all,

We have a situation that we need to weld cap (material P11) to weldolet with P22 material. Size 2" NPS. Line temp is 560C and pressure 48bar. The rating of the main header is 1500# P22 mtl. Can we weld to the following conditions P11 mtl cap to weldolet P22 mtl.

Dear ;
As such no difference as far as MTC concerned.  ASME starts  with SA and ASTM with A . For example ASTM-A-106  and ASME-SA-106 . But ASME dose not cover all items of ASTM.   American National Standards Institute, also abbreviated as ANSI, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, also abbreviated as ASME, are both non-profit organizations mainly focusing on bringing uniformity in voluntary standards used in the engineering discipline. code – also known as ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code or BPVC – is the standard that regulates the design, development and construction of boilers and pressure vessels utilized in a variety of industries. ASME takes reference of ASTM in it’s publications, so when you raising requisition for any product, such as Valve whose dimensions are defined in ASME B 16.34, you need to refer respective ASTM standards, like A105 if the valve is to made out of forging.
