Hi dear all
Please somebody tell me if I can use a plate PQR for qualification a
pipe WPS according to ASME Sec. IX?
I could not find any thing about that in ASME code. If it's possible
then why there is pipe diameter limit in PQRs?
Please refer to ASME paragraph.

Thanks

Yes you can use plate PQR for qualification a pipe WPS as per ASME sect IX provided applicable P number, Group number is within limit.
As per QW 451 table no restriction for pipe diameter
However there is restriction for pipe diameter PQR for certain consrtuction code i.e  API 1104

Hi,
PQR you can use either plate or pipe..it doesn't matter...pls.rfer to QW-451 for PQR qualification limits...PQR is for P number,Welding Process, thickness .filler metal ,process...etc...its better to do the PQR with Plate for easy for welders and Procedure qualifications...Pipe diameter limits mentioned in the Section-IX only for welder's qualifications. You can use the PQR with Plate for Pipe also..When you qualify the welders for pipe  you can use the same PQR of plate with the Thickness limits and all other essential variables mentioned in QW-250 to QW-265 according to the process you are using for PQR.
If u have any doubts feel free to ask..

Thanks & Regards,

Dear Rayan,

Please refer to clause no. QW-211 of ASME Sec. IX. Also note that pipe diameter is not essential variable for PQR qualifications as per Sec. IX. However, it is essential variable for Welder performance qualifications.

For API 1104, pipe diameter is essential variable for PQR and welder performance qualification as well.

Dear
I have one observation. The position of welding is also important. If it is a 5 g position actual welding , will you be able to use plate for process qualification.

hi,
PQR is not concerned with welding position. You have to qualify the welders according to The actual welding position with the applicable WPS and PQR.

Hi,

Please note that PQR is mainly intented for proving the mechanial poperty of weld. Position is not the matter in case of ASME Sec IX if impact test requirement is not applicable.

In case of impact test  requiement, if you qaulify the PQR in 3G position (highest heat input position) it will qualify all position.

If your production weld is in 5G position you have to qualify the welder in 5G or 6G position to prove the skill of welder.

If the qualifiation is for pipe line as per API 1104, dia, thikness and position is matter.

No restriction for WPS, but  for welder  performance qualification there is a restriction in minimum dia say 73mm od
kgp
