Hi all,

First, quick question - is submitting my sightings to this list enough
for record-keeping purposes, or should I be reporting records
somewhere online?

Ok, on to butterflies! Today I took part in a little bioblitz at
Habitat Wildlife Sanctuary in Belmont. It was a cold morning. I saw
at least 6 little wood-satyrs clinging to the grass, and one eastern
tailed blue.

Here's a wood-satyr:

I've never managed to get close to these guys, so it was neat to be
able to approach while they were in their resting state.

And here's an American Copper from Drumlin Farm yesterday, Lincoln MA:

Rosemary and everyone,

This might be a good time to reaffirm that yes, in order to keep my
Butterflies of Massachusetts website up to date, and for other research and
writing projects, I do record all butterfly sightings that are posted here
on "masslep." I also record whether there is a photo, and the link to it if
possible. These constitute the BOM Records, and are separate from the
records kept by Mark Fairbrother of the MBC, although Mark and I do share
our records and keep in touch about sightings. If there are locations that
reporters wish kept secret, and not published anywhere, I will respect that
request and abide by it. Please send your records to me privately if you
wish; several people already do.

I also welcome collection records, although I myself do not collect
specimens and urge others to take photographs instead. There are in
existence older butterfly collections from Massachusetts which will not make
it to museums, and I would be interested in lists from such collections
since they may be of historical value.

Thanks everyone,

Sharon Stichter
