The scheme for specifying vehicle direction tags seems a bit opaque --
the #1 has '1_01_0032v0_0' and '1_01_0029v0_1'. Is there a way to
enumerate the available directions, or should I just scrape this from
vehicleLocations?

Take a look at the routeConfig output, the properties of the
<direction> elements defines the tags, title (headsign) and name.
