Are you a member of the Sierra Club?  The Sierra Club is the nation’s largest grass-roots environmental organization.  It is John Muir’s legacy.  Today it acts on our behalf to save our old-growth forests on public lands, to halt mountain top removal and stream destruction, and to halt the burning of coal that is significant in causing global climate change and mercury pollution.  Your membership helps to support these and many other important undertakings geared toward a more sustainable future.  We of the Marys Peak Group strive to support our local environmental efforts, as well as provide many enjoyable outdoor programs for all to enjoy without obligation.  A portion of your membership also goes toward helping us in those endeavors.  Attached to this email is an application form to make it easy to join now.

Tuesday, October 13th – "Global Climate Change and Its Impact on Oregon" Professor James Coakley from OSU’s College of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences will outline projected changes in Oregon’s environments due to global climate change.   The presentation is co-sponsored by the Corvallis League of Women Voters and the Friends of the Corvallis-Benton County Library.  7:00 p.m.  Corvallis-Benton County Public Library, 645 NW Monroe St., Corvallis.

Dogs must be under leash or voice control at all times, be well-behaved and non-aggressive to people and other dogs. Six-mile hike on gravel roads with some hills and elevation gain; stunning views of the valley due to some recent logging.  Walk-in hunt season going on, so wear bright-colored clothing and put something colorful on your dogs. Sunday, October 25 – Kid-Friendly Walk on Clemens Park Loop.  Join us as we stroll through lovely Clemens County Park near Alsea on a family-friendly excursion. We will be joined by a biologist from the Oregon Dept. of Fish and Wildlife. She will introduce us to the conditions necessary for a healthy salmon habitat along the North Fork of the Alsea River.  If our timing works out well with the fall rains, we may see some salmon on their migration. Clemens Park features a salmon viewing platform next to the river. We will see large Pacific yew trees, Douglas firs, grand firs, raptors and sword ferns up to 6 feet in diameter.   Afterwards, we will stop at a nearby hatchery for a tour.  Have you ever seen a sturgeon up close? Easy, 1 nearly level mile; could be muddy.  Meet at the Wilkinson Hall parking lot (Arnold & 27th) for a 1:00 p.m. departure.  Contact leaders:  Julie  Arrington, 541-752-6052,Julie.s...@gmail.com; Mike Neeley-Brown.
