And here are the details ……

Announcing the New MPG Eco-Credit Program.  Here’s the deal:  Show up and participate in a Marys Peak Group trail work day or MPG-sponsored tree planting party, and you will earn one Eco-Credit.  These Eco-Credits can be accumulated and redeemed for a variety of awards, such as trail passes, T-shirts or they can be donated toward the cost of a tree to be planted in Corvallis.  Other awards and eligible events may be added as time goes on, so show up and be a winner!  Details will be available at any advertised work event, or you can contact Jane Luther at jane...@gmail.com

Wednesday, October 28th – Keeping Salem/Keizer Cool & Climate-Friendly:  Creating Livable Communities Through Blueprint Planning.   Join 1000 Friends of Oregon and Oregon Environmental Council’s Chris Hagerbaumer to learn of ways we can make Salem-Keizer a more sustainable, climate-friendly community.

In order to help Oregon meet its greenhouse gas reduction targets and create more livable communities, the newly created Task Force on Greenhouse Gas Emissions is considering strategies to reduce global warming pollution through smarter land use and transportation planning.  Join the conversation about practical, common sense strategies to provide Oregon's fastest-growing communities with better transportation choices, lower household transportation costs and ways to make your neighborhood vibrant and healthy for our families and future generations.  This event will also feature an introduction by Senate President Peter Courtney.  6:00 - 7:30 p.m.  Salem Central Library’s Anderson Room, 585 Liberty St SE, Salem.  Please RSVP:  Tara Sulzen, Field Organizer with 1000 Friends at ta...@friends.org or call 503 497 1000 ext. 153.

Thursday, October 29th – “Namibia:  Land of Open Spaces.”  In April 2009, a group of twelve adventurers from the Willamette Valley traveled to Namibia, a country situated on the west coast of southern Africa.  Namibia is a land of striking geographic contrasts:  deserts, grassy plains, and granite mountains.  Tasha Wulff will recount the experiences of the group as they traveled 2,500 miles from the Fish River Canyon, to the red dunes of Sossuvlei, to Etosha National Park, one of southern Africa’s finest game reserves. 7:00 p.m.  Corvallis-Benton County Public Library, 645 NW Monroe St., Corvallis.

Sunday, November 1st – Henline Mountain and Falls.  The trail to 120-ft Henline Falls gently follows the bed of a long-abandoned road to an old silver mine (easy, 1.8 round trip miles, with 200 feet of elevation gain).  Then, starting from a different trailhead, the "exhilarating" path switchbacks up into the forest, traverses a large rockslide, and then climbs steadily to a lookout point with views across the N. Santiam valley to Mt. Jefferson and other peaks (difficult, 5.6 round trip miles, with 2,200 feet of elevation gain). Meet at Wilkinson Hall parking lot for early 8:00 a.m. departure.   Note:   Daylight savings time ended last night!  Pre-registration required; wilderness limit of 12.  Contact leader: Robert Verhoogen, 541-745-5185 or rverh...@mac.com

Tuesday, November 3rd - Shellburg Falls.  Shellburg Falls is just as pretty as those at Silver Falls State Park but is less crowded.  Autumn’s colors may still be good on the Vine Maple Trail and we can sit on the bench behind the falls and watch the water come down.  Giant anthills too!  Moderate, less than 7 miles, maybe 1,000 feet of gain.  Meet on 1st Street behind the Super 8 Motel at 8:30 a.m.  Contact leader Randy Selig, 738-0753, or rse...@mindspring.com

Friday, November 6th - Mill Hill Loop.  We'll start our hike at the Woodpecker Loop parking and take the tie trail to Mill Hill.  Bring binoculars and wear waterproof boots since Mill Hill can be a bit sloppy as winter comes on.  We'll have some good views down over a splendid marsh.  Easy, 4 miles with something over 200 feet of elevation gain.  Leave from parking lot behind Super 8 Motel at the corner of 1st and Harrison at 9:30. Contact leader Leslie Hogan at 924-0130 or qwi...@peak.org

Saturday, November 7th – Tum Tum River to Ridge Loop.  We have obtained a special permit from Starker Forests to hike on this private tree farm.  Our route follows roads through diverse scenery, from quaint bridges across babbling streams, through shady green forests, along a hillside meadow, to a ridge with a broad view of the Coast Range.  The hike includes some sustained elevation gains, and there could be muddy areas, so it would be helpful to be in good physical shape.  Moderate/Difficult, 8.6 miles, 1,100 feet elevation gain.  Meet at the Wilkinson Hall parking lot for a 9:00 AM departure. Contact Leader: Jane Luther at 758-8279 or jane...@gmail.com

Saturday, November 7th & November 14th – Tree Planting in Corvallis.  Planting trees can be one of the greatest actions we can take toward a sustainable future.  You are invited to help plant street trees in three areas of Corvallis, on two successive Saturdays, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.  The trees were purchased through donations or grants by the Marys Peak Group of the Sierra Club, the City of Corvallis Urban Forestry Program, the Corvallis Citizens Advisory Commission on Civic Beautification and Urban Forestry, the Corvallis Odd Fellows Barnum Lodge #7, and the Jobs Addition Neighborhood Association.  Both of these events are eligible for earning MPG Eco-Credits.  The meeting place for November 7th is at Franklin Park on the corner of NW 15th Street and Taylor Avenue at 9:00 a.m.  Bring gloves, and a shovel, if you have one.  If you would like to participate or have a group that would like to participate in this fun and worthwhile experience, please contact Dave Eckert at:  dec...@willamettewatershed.com

Sunday, November 8th – Drift Creek Falls Plus.   We’ll visit the spectacular suspension bridge over Drift Creek Falls, plus a couple of other special places along the coast north of Newport.   (Note:   This is not the Drift Creek Wilderness, which we have visited in the past, but a small, dramatic natural area near Lincoln City.)    Bring a light lunch or snacks; we’ll stop in Newport for chowder after the hike.  Easy, not more than 5 miles, with 500 feet of elevation gain.  Meet at the Wilkinson Hall parking lot (Arnold & 27th) for an 8:00 a.m. departure; possible late return.  Contact leader:  Ray Drapek, 541-754-7364 or dra...@fsl.orst.edu

2010 Sierra Club Calendars.  These stunningly beautiful calendars are going fast!  The large wall calendars are $13.00, and the desk engagement book calendars are $14.00.  We offer free delivery with a smile in Corvallis and Albany.  They will also be available for purchase at the Thursday evening talk at the library (Oct. 29th).  Quantities are limited, so order yours now!  Contact Jane Luther at jane...@gmail.com or 758-8279.
