Please use this thread for welcoming new members to the forum. New members: could you also use this thread when introducing yourselves to the forum. (It keeps things a bit tidier that way!) Thanks.

Dear Derek, I first heard Mario Lanza on the radio when I was eight
years old in 1954. I have loved listening to his voice ever since.
Not only did he have a beautiful voice but the expression and passion
he put into his singing adds to the total effect - Beautiful! I have
been trying to buy your book : Mario Lanza A Life In Pictures and
can't find it anywhere. I was told it was out of print. Is there any
chance of your having another printing made? I'm also trying to find
the BBC documentary called Mario Lanza Singing To The Gods. Do you
know if it is still available? Many thanks Anita

Hi Anita
here is a link to the documentary on youtube (the British version I
believe, entitled "Mario Lanza magazine")

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOOdSmyopwg&feature=PlayList&p=DBE206CA7B90DE43&index=0&playnext=1

I believe it is also included on the "Midnight Kiss/Toast of New
Orleans" DVD that was released a couple years back:

Take care =)

Hi Anita

Actually, I'm not that Derek! Derek *Mannering* frequents the Jeff
Rense forum.

I'm afraid I can't really help you with the book you're after. Mario
Lanza: A Life in Pictures has been out of print for several years, and
seems to be as rare as hen's teeth. It's certainly worth pursuing,
though, as it contains many delightful photos, beautifully reproduced.
All I can really suggest is that you keep an eye on ebay as well as
the excellent abebooks.com, which specializes in hard-to-find titles.

If it's photos of Lanza you're after, however, Armando Cesari's
magnificent biography Mario Lanza: An American Tragedy contains over
260 photos (plus a CD of rare live & private recordings):
http://www.amazon.com/Mario-Lanza-American-Tragedy-Voices/dp/1880909669/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1253500683&sr=8-1

The documentary Singing to the Gods (not to be confused with
Mannering's book of the same name) is available on DVD as part of the
Warner Bros release of That Midnight Kiss/The Toast of New Orleans:
http://www.amazon.com/That-Midnight-Kiss-Toast-Orleans/dp/B000PAAK50/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1253500319&sr=1-1

It's a slightly different version of the documentary than the one that
was originally shown on BBC TV. Some of the film clips and Lanza
recordings featured had to be changed for the US market due to
copyright restrictions. I prefer the BBC version!

Cheers

Shawn: You beat me to it!

Yes, the version you posted the links for *is* the British version of
the doco. I'm surprised it's on youtube, actually -- and I don't
imagine it'll be allowed to stay there for very long.

Dear Derek, Please accept my apologies for confusing you with the
other Derek. You'd think I couldn't read!!! I guess I was so
"excited" at finding your forum on Mario Lanza and reading some of the
information on it (a couple of hours reading, forgetting the time!!! I
can see there will be many more hours of reading too.) that I didn't
look at your name properly. This "talking" on the internet is
something new to me , as is You Tube. Finding all those videos of
Mario Lanza was a revelation and I am thoroughly enjoying spending
hours at a time viewing them and making my play lists, which I can
then listen to every day as I go about working/sitting during the
day. Many thanks for the information. Anita

No need to apologise, Anita. And feel free to join us if you wish.
You're actually the first non-member to post here since we opened up
the forum to members and non-members alike a few weeks ago. It's good
to know the system is functioning properly!

You're most welcome to post questions about Lanza's life and
recordings. Do have a look through our Essays & Reviews section too;
it contains a discography, a biographical essay, English translations
of many of the Neapolitan songs and Italian arias that Mario recorded,
and all sorts of other things. And don't forget to check out the rare
recordings that are available at the bottom of the Photos section.

Cheers
Derek

I recently had a couple of enjoyable Lanza-related exchanges on
YouTube with an interesting fellow named Steve (http://www.youtube.com/
watch?v=ll3Y6QFKwY8), and I'm delighted to see that he's just joined
us. Here's Steve self-introduction:

"Hello all, I'm a former semi-professional singer who retains a great
interest in the vocal arts. I love first-rate singers, whether they
are classical, popular or anything in between. Perhaps more to the
point, I've been listening to and admiring Mario Lanza for 32 years:).
He was the most naturally gifted American tenor of whom we have
recorded evidence (and FILMED evidence, for that matter). It's
terribly sad that personal and emotional problems kept Lanza from
fulfilling his potential. But we have his finest recordings, which
preserve his enormous talent and incomplete but still substantial
achievement. Best to all! ----- Steve."

Welcome aboard, Steve!

Cheers
Derek

I would like to welcome our latest member, Barnabas, to this forum.
Barnabas is a long-standing Lanza admirer, and if I remember correctly
(we were in contact some years ago), he is a former (?) diplomat from
Hungary. Welcome aboard, Barnabas!

Hi Barnabas,
I came also from Hungary (although I live with my husband in Cologne
Germany), but I`m happy greeting you here in the Mario Lanza Forum and
wishing you many great times, discussing, and learning about the great
and unforgettable Mario Lanza. Szervus and enjoy the forum. As Derek
told, Welcome aboard!

Hello Zsazsa, I mean Zsuzsa,

How long have been living abroad? As I mentioned I've been a Lanza fan since my childhood, exactly for half a century. I have collected all the bios, CDs, all the movies of ML on DVD. I was fortunate to visit ML's birtplace incl. room, meet his aunt, visit the ML Museum in Philadelphia, and meet some friends like Damon Lanza, Elaine Malbin, Ann Blyth, Bill Ronayne, etc. Great treat!

Kind regards,
Barnabas

I'd like to welcome our newest member, Norma Lynch.

(Norma: I'm moving your introductory post here, as this is the
discussion thread we use for new members.)

And here's Norma delightful self-introduction:

Hello. I used to love Mario's films and voice when I was young but
only had a few records. I knew nothing about his life. About two years
ago by chance my husband bought the Mario CD
The Definitive Collection. The film The Great Caruso was on TCM. As I
watched it the love of his voice came back to me. I then played the CD
for the first time and was bowled over when I listened to the arias.
Since then I have collected all his films and many CDs. I joined the
British Mario Lanza Society and went to their 50th anniversary and met
Elissa Lanza Bregman.

I am so pleased to be able to join the Lanza Forum. I have learned so
much from it.

Best
wishes
