From the Secretariat:
We begin this month with a round of thanks to everyone who has supported the concept of using the IOSEA website for exchanging information on their turtle conservation activities around the Indian Ocean and South-East Asia — and following through by supplying
feature articles, longer profiles and other news.
As mentioned in a feature article in April, the ongoing work by WWF in the area of climate change adaptation is a good example of an approach that warrants consideration in the IOSEA region as well. Several items posted to the IOSEA Message Board also make
for interesting reading.
This Month's IOSEA Profile focuses on the observations and recommendations made by the IOSEA Western Indian Ocean - Marine Turtle Task Force, when it met in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, last December. The full report of the workshop is now available on line. In related news, Dr. Peter Richardson, Chair of the WIO-MTTF, is seeking to organise a follow-up meeting in the margins of the forthcoming WIOMSA Scientific Symposium taking place in Maputo, Mozambique, in late October.
Please enjoy the many interesting news headlines that you may have missed in April, including some positive stories of Philippine fishermen assisting in the release of entangled turtles; but also some disturbing news from India about the impacts of light pollution on hatchlings, and the apparent break-down of an important turtle conservation programme in East Kalimantan, Indonesia.
