Hi Laurent, to view the Marinetraffic data collected from volunteer AIS
receiving stations you will need an internet connection (e.g. via Wifi or 3G
- but these only work within limited areas and near land, you would need a
satellite internet connection further out) and suitable display device (e.g.
Android/iPhone or computer - laptop/notebook etc).

You could view AIS traffic near to your boat by receiving it directly (e.g.
Marine band antenna + AIS receiver + computer) - there's lots of options
available to choose from - just Google "AIS receiver".

Cheers, Clive

You have to have a computer with either Internet access or a expensive
satellite system. I started using chart plotters
powered by a computer 6 years ago, I put a wireless internet conection so I
could get my almost daily updates. As a result anyplace a can get a
internet signal ( I use a sprint MIFI card ) I'm able to get
marinetraffic.com . The only time
I lose a signal is when I'm to far off shore. Which isn't to offten.

Hi Laurent, there's some general guidance on AIS reception: http://www.navigate-us.com/guidance/ais-receivers

Lots of suppliers for AIS kit - you should Google "AIS receivers" , for example:

Combo AIS Receiver and display:

http://www.vespermarine.co.uk/marine-safety-products/ais-watchmate-rx...
http://www.cheaperchandlery.com/ais-radar-receiver-842-p.asp

AIS (receiver only - needs PC and software e.g. Shipplotter: http://www.coaa.co.uk/shipplotter.htm to display):

http://www.milltechmarine.com/Smart-Radio-SR161-AIS-Receiver_p_167.html
http://www.comarsystems.com/ais_2_usb.html

Note all the above will only show AIS transmissions within range of your boat, and will not show AIS received from further afield such as via MarineTraffic (to view that you would need an internet connection as detailed in my first reply).

PS I have no experience of running AIS on a boat - I'm just running a shore based receiver.

Cheers, Clive
