GENESIS CHAPTER 38 (Jacob’s Sonà Judah & his jialat family)

 

 

About that time Judah left his brothers and went to stay with a man from Adullam named Hirah. There Judah met the daughter of a Canaanite man whose name was Shua. He married her and slept with her. He had 3 sons with her: Er, Onan and Shelah.

 

Judah got Tamar as a wife for his firstborn son Er. But Er angered God and God took away his life. In the tradition of that time, Judah got Onan to impregnate Tamar on behalf of Er (so the kids would be recognised as Er's). Knowing this, whenever he slept with Tamar he spilled his semen on the ground so he wouldn't produce a child for his brother. What he did was wicked in God's eyes, so he also died. (The people then is promiscuous just like present times)

 

So Judah told Tamar to return to her father and remain a widow until Shelah grows up, because he feared that he would die, like his brothers.

 

After some time, Judah's wife, the daughter of Shua, died. When Judah had finished mourning, he and his friend Hirah from Adullam went to Timnah where the men were shearing Judah's sheep. When Tamar was told that her father-in-law was on his way to Timnah to shear his sheep, she took off her widow's clothes, covered her face with a veil, and disguised herself.

 

She sat down at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah. (She did this because she realized that Shelah was grown up now, and she hadn't been given to him in marriage.)  When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute, because her face was covered.

 

Since he didn't know who she was, he offered to pay her a young goat from the flock. As a security, she asked him to hand her his signet ring, its cord, and his shepherd's staff until he sends the payment. He gave them to her, slept with her and got her pregnant  When she left, she swapped into her widow clothing. (God is greatly displeased with the behaviour and Aids probably started then)

 

Judah sent his friend Hirah to deliver the young goat to get back his stuff from the woman, but his friend couldn't find her. Hirah looked all around but couldn't find her and told Judah. He decided to keep it quiet or else they would be laughed at.

 

About three months later Judah was told that Tamar had been acting like a prostitute and is pregnant." Judah ordered for her to be brought out to be burned." While she was brought out, she sent a message that she was made pregnant by the one who owned the signet ring, cord and shepherd staff.

 

Judah acknowledged that she wasn't guilty and admitted it was because he didn't give Shelah to her. When Tamar gave birth, she had twin boys. When one of them stuck his hand out, a piece of red yarn was tied to his wrist to indicate he was first. But then he drew back his hand and his brother came out. So the midwife named him Perez and the other Zerah.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Food for thought: God gave us  a good role model of Adam & Even and bind them together with a marriage Vow (which is today’s registry of marriage, rom). He did not create 2 husbands nor 5 wives during creation. Thus, may we not get involved in distorted love relationships that will cause heartaches, pain and diseases to our family and society at large. May God be with you today.
