Hi,
first of all my gratulation to the developers for this excellent
project which makes OSM vector maps available to millions of
smartphone users!

I mainly use your with the wonderful application Locus.

I'm wondering about the status of some features I would like to see
(and at least are partially promised by the statement of the mapsforge
project.

These are my questions:
- Onboard route calculation. What is the status for this? I only read
in some quite old discussions in this group about this feature but it
doesn't seem to be part of the last release and also not of the
upcoming release.

- Onboard navigation. What is the status here? I could also figure
that this is more a task for a frontend like Locus. What is the
intention of the project?

- Onboard searching for information in the vector map like addresses.
Is this planned? What is the status?

I really appreciate your feedback even in case there are no plans for
a certain project, this is still way better than hoping for things
which won't come ever.

Thanks,
Tommi

Hi Tommi,

first of all sorry for the late reply and thanks for your compliments.

Onboard route calculation is not yet released and will unfortunately
also not be part of the upcoming 0.3.0 release.

Route finding is a relatively complex task and making it fast (few
seconds also for long routes) on mobile devices is even more
challenging due to resource limitations like small main memory. A
major challenge is also a robust extraction of routing graphs from
notoriously inconsistent OSM data.

Currently we have a Routing API which is implemented by two routing
algorithms (Highway Hierarchies and Contraction Hierarchies). These
are routing algorithms which run on pre-processed street-network
graphs and yield the desired short query times. In the last month we
also improved routing graph extraction to consider turn-restrictions.
I would consider all these components to be in the state of
prototypes. To be released, they lack intensive testing, comprehensive
documentation, better automation of graph extraction and
pre-processing, as well the provision of a simple sample application.

Long story short: I'm confident that we will release a route
calculation component. However, due to our limited resources, I guess
this is more a matter of several months, rather than weeks.

No one is currently working on this component. Onboard navigation is
even more complex than route calculation (you need for example a good
map matching). We decided to set focus on improving the vector map and
making route calculation more robust (the order reflects the
priority). So currently there is no intention to provide onboard
navigation. I would consider it as a long-term goal.

Personally I would really like to have this feature incorporated as a
component. We had a working prototype, but no resources to make it
robust and releasable. The hard part with providing a search feature,
is to extract the appropriate data from OSM and relate it to each
other (e.g. in which city is a street located). Building a front-end
is the easier part. The developer who was responsible for the
extraction has made his component available as a separate project
(http://osm4j.svn.sourceforge.net/).

Again, long story short: Also with regard to this component we
currently lack the resources to include it into the mapsforge
libraries. In consequence, there are no concrete plans for releasing a
search component.

In conclusion: Lack of resources prevents us from turning working
prototypes (route calc and search feature) into releasable software.
For the route calculation, I'm confident that it can be part of a
release in several month.

So if any of you is interested in shortening the time to a potential
release, your contribution is always much appreciated.

Best regards,
Jrgen
