I'd like to invite DC area OSM mappers to join me at the Martin Luther King Jr Memorial Library on Saturday.  We can meet at 11am in the Library Lab (first floor, southwest corner of the building in the Business / Tech division)

Depending on the weather and what folks want to do, we can go out around Chinatown / Penn Quarter, map and update OSM.  Or we can work on hacking OSM, finishing up with the building imports, and such.

Who's interested and anything particular you want to focus on?

Cheers,
Katie

I recently downloaded two of the GPX Android Tools for OSM, and took a bunch of pictures and attempted to gather data about the bike trail between Georgetown and the Maryland state line on the Capitol Crescent Trial.  But when I got home and tried to update OSM, I got stuck trying to add the features I had collected and gave up.

Can someone show me how to do that on Saturday?  Anyone else interested in knowing that process?

Is the internet connection at the library any faster now?

Sure I can take a look.

The library has worked to make it better and we also have a Clear 4G connection that we can use to supplement.

Hi everyone

I've moved to DC and psyched to get involved in OSM locally.
Especially want to look at broadening participation in new areas ...
say all the places receiving donations in this incredible map:
http://data.awidercircle.org/. I'm just getting familiar with the
areas and actors, but I'm thinking to approach Charter Schools, local
organizations, DC government offices, etc, to find a good entry point
into these communities.

Not sure if I'll make it Saturday (still unpacking) but hope to meet
up soon.

Cheers

The DC government has been good to us, and we talked about a joint mapping party, but Kate got busy,
and I got busy, and it never happened.

Sadly a lot of the folks we worked with have moved on, but hopefull there are other good folks. :)

Mikel,

I had been hoping to work with neighborhood organizations, with the DC
library as a good entry point and partner. They are very interested
but have only so much volunteer time.

In the spring, we can do events at neighborhood libraries and invite
students and other folks, and there is even more potential in the
library lab concept to have "modules" -- small mapping kits to take to
the branch libraries and places where we do events.

Your help in this would be fantastic.

Great, look forward to more with the libraries. That's the strategy Thea Clay took in Atlanta too.

I'm also interested to do some mapping with Occupy. Not only the encampment, but the surrounding support infrastructure of businesses delivering food, restrooms, etc. Go down there with Walking Papers to see if anyone is interested in data collection. Maybe do a custom rendering.  And also, would be cool to do some balloon photography, like some of the other Occupy sites have done ... either on a quiet or a noisy day.

I think it's been general OSM consensus that these encampments are not
permanent enough to be mapped.

That would be valuable.

Mikel,

>> the surrounding support infrastructure of businesses delivering food, restrooms, etc.

That'd be very interesting, not only the final result, but the process.  It would make for an interesting article, like the Mapping Xylophones   (http://weait.com/content/how-map-xylophone), and would be a nice into to how and why to use OSM.

Would you use TileMill for the custom rendering?  Or ...?

I wish I was with the 1% mapping Xylophones on ski slopes! ;)

But for sure, I blog obsessively about anything I care about.

For Occupy, my inclination is to use a set of "namespaced" tags for things like the support infrastructure ... it seems so special purpose, I'm not sure more general tags are possible. Of course, if anyone has a different suggestion, totally open to it.

The process is definitely going to be interesting. I'm not even sure Occupy wants to be mapped. And since I don't know anything about the infrastructure, we're going to have to convince folks down there to map things out.

And yea, it may well be more interesting to do balloon mapping down there, than OSM. I'm going in with an experimental mindset!

I think it's been general OSM consensus that these encampments are not
permanent enough to be mapped.

There's only one principle in OSM more powerful than consensus: It's better to beg forgiveness than ask permission.
