This probably belongs somewhere else, but since this is the off topic
garbage can, let me start here since then it can't possibly be off
topic.

Where did the list of POIs come from? Is it some GIS standard?

I'm wondering because it leaves out "public toilet," but includes, for
example, "yoga center." Some just seem weird, such as "water
navigation," which has an ambiguous meaning in English, and
"pilgrimage," which, in English, is a journey, not a site.

Also, some POIs seem like more general cases of others: water, lake,
seasonal lake (all of which are called out separately) and some don't
have a clear distinction: irrigation and canal attribute of river
feature.

There doesn't seem to be a deterministic list of feature
specifications, so that two mappers would know to use "irrigation" to
make a feature with characteristics A, B, and C and "river>canal" for
characteristics X, Y, and Z.

I'm trying to put together a post or page that attempts to rationalize
the POIs with suggestions for additions, changes, and a few deletions,
but I wanted to start a discussion whether there's some rationale
behind the list of POIs not apparent to the layman.

Maybe one approach would be a collaborative spreadsheet showing POIs,
their sub features, and distinguishing characteristics.

A spread sheet list would be fine, allowing users with more than 500 edits to add more in the list, of course subject to approval by GMM Team.

Bravo for this, Rich! It's one of those things I've been wanting to
address for a long time. If you start it, I'm sure many will
collaborate, though it would be nice if MM would comment on whether
they are interested in fixing it.

Yes, i think this is something we would support and perhaps encourage.
To answer the original question, we start with a base set of
categories and add more as we / users find a need for them - subject
to some internal normalization and filtering.

Please give us a couple of days to get this going,

I think it is or the most of it does value the same. I tried google
maps search terminology on iphone and normal phone maps. e.g. Query
like Restaurant Near London results out the only POI marked in map as
Restaurants. I was actually finding out if there is any difference
between railway station POI and train station POI. It is in the list
as a one category but in search it doesn't result the same in Map Maker.

Hi, I need a new category. Cannot find something similar. It reffers
to "cabins for rent", "alquiler de cabañas" in spanish. I'm working in
a touristic villeage and it's the most popular type of lodging, and
also is well known in other touristic destinations. There isn't a
hotel, neither a guesthouse or a hostel, because they are individual
houses with almost all the services.
Thanks for your support
Gustavo

I would say that these are the same as "guesthouse", which I take to
mean a place that is generally rented by the week or month. I think
that just because the word contains "house" should not require that it
refer to only one building - many types of residences consist of
multiple buildings, including single-family cabanas (particularly at
resorts), right?

I am glad you brought this up, though. I realize that I labeled
"résidences" inconsistently where I was editing :) I now find, though,
that I cannot change an existing feature from "building" to
"guesthouse" :(

"Alquiler de cabañas" sound similar to the vacation, short term rental
condominiums such as are popular in Hawaii, outfitted with kitchens
and laundry facilities, typically not one or two night rentals.

AM909, Rich thank for your answers,
Yes, this is mainly for vacations, one or two weeks or a large
weekend, and, thank you for the good description, seems like a little
bit different as a guesthouse, but it is. Nevertheless, here in my
country is commonly know as cabañas instead of casas de huespesdes
(guesthouse), add, I guess the addition will help people get better
searches, which is the final purpose of our contribution, and, the
link with additional categories or synonyms may close the circuit.

The usual word in English for institutional student residences is
dormitory, though sometimes glossed as residence hall.

Just to confuse things, though, guesthouses often offer dormitory
style lodging where there are facilities for more than 1 unrelated
traveler to share a sleeping area. Typically a bathroom/toilet area is
separate.

For "Students living places (i don't know the exact word)" - Hostel is available in the list.
There should be a provision to edit the category of a POI shown incorrectly marked.

Bump.

I'm not looking for a final answer, but just a sense of the strategy
or the 30K foot view. Maybe the start of a new tracking topic in a
different group than "coffee shop."
