When I build blocks of houses Google rejects them because I should
split them up into separate buildings. When i build separate buildings
google rejects them because of incomplete textures. Which cant be more
complete, bcause model maker generates is own textures, and buildings
touching eachother are black where te overlap is. Is it me that thinks
there must be a googlefool somewhere? Or am I just talking to some
sodden-programmed computer which rejects almost everything? Any clues
out there? I hate this kind of fooling around with the customer. I am
trying to offer some help on the maps but I think I'll stop until the
acceptance is better than it is now. I hate to waste time.

Hi,

I assume from your description that you're using Building Maker, and
therefore the texturing isn't in your hands. The reviewers are real
people, although very heavily worked people. What you're seeing isn't
supposed to happen, but the process for handling row houses isn't
fantastic. The reviewers don't have enough context to figure out
what's going on, so they tend to render overly harsh judgments.
Here's a few things you can try, depending on how much effort you're
willing to spend:

1) Build the whole block, and then, if it's rejected for "needs
splitting", appeal the review (the "Tell us why we're wrong" link on
the model details page) and explain the situation.
2) Build individual houses, and if they're rejected for incomplete
texturing, appeal. This is not ideal (it's more work for you, there's
likely to be mismatches between the models, and the whole block won't
look optimal until all the buildings get accepted). However, since we
really do prefer single houses as models to whole blocks, we'd like
this solution better if you're willing to put up with us through it.
3) Build the whole block, pull the resulting model into SketchUp, and
split it there (applying neutral textures to the walls connecting
individual houses. Concrete textures, or textures drawn from the
paint or stucco or brick of the "typical block" work best here). Make
components out of the split houses and upload the individual
components. You may still have to appeal the occasional model, but
this technique ensures that there aren't height discrepancies and
other artifacts. From our point of view, this is almost the best of
all possible worlds; we get individual buildings as models, and they
all look good even if they don't all go live at the same time. It's
more work for you, though, so if you're thinking "you want me to
WHAT." I'm certainly not going to insist.
4) Email me with the set of models you're working on. I can take a
look at them, and possibly suggest something more specific.

Hi vineet,

If I understand you correctly, you're modeling a building that has not
been completed yet. We do not currently have a "future buildings"
layer in Google Earth. You can resubmit your phototextured model as
soon as construction is complete. If the building is not visible in
the Google Earth imagery, it may be necessary to use the "Tell us why
we're wrong" link and supply a photo of the finished building to
demonstrate that it's really there.

In the meantime, if you're modeling buildings that are in progress (or
even in the planning stages), we suggest using the Google Earth API
(http://code.google.com/apis/earth/) on one of your websites instead.
You can show any models you like in that format, along with much more
flexibility in the KML used to enhance the models.

Thanks for the input and i hope i am putting this question in the
right place.

I live in the Philadelphia and i am really LOVING the SketchUp and
Building Maker experience. My wife says i've found a new addiction.
Anyway, i am modeling a lot of the "deep city" area of Philadelphia,
which involves a lot of attached row homes. In many cases, the entire
block from one end to the other is a long, row of attached homes,
mostly two- and three-story individual homes attached by common walls.
There are often 20-30 attached homes in a single block.

Many times, the front yard facade of these homes are in the same
plane, although there are many times porches, stairs, canopies, etc.
More often, the rear yards, or rear sides of these buildings are in
different planes as folks build rooms and porchesd onto the backs of
their homes.

So the question is, how to model? I can make one long block with
SketchUp and then use the push/pull tool to vary the facades as
required. This results in a pretty tedious texturing situation where
"getting photo texture" for the front and rear facades involves many
(many) individual surfaces. Often, there is no good street view of the
rear sides of these type homes.

Anyway, any guidance you guys at GE might offer would be greatly
appreciated. The SketchUp models are, of course, much larger files.
I've had many rejected because of using canned textures (i think) but
doing this row house process with SU pretty much requires it. I'll
keep plugging away in the meantime, to see how much of our great (BIG)
city i can model for you...

Keep up the good work! LOVE this software!!

hi allison
thanks for your reply will try to do it.
I am currently doing a project in goa mapusa india and will be uploading the buildings. I think last time you had one of my buildings through with the submission and will surely require your help in pushing these too. Thanks a lot,
Will be in touch,
