And if there are licensing issues, a hypothetical:
What about if I live in the US and have purchased a copy of MI Pro,
then I pack up and move to Australia - can I still use this? Or do I
have to purchase a new copy, even if it is the same version etc?
Just wondering how such a massive price difference can exist.

No, if you can find a reseller who don't mind, it is possible.
I tried to do that with ArcGIS, but all resellers I contacted refused and
you can't buy ArcGIS off the shelf (same with MapInfo I guess). Here the
price difference is like 1500 USD versus 4000 USD. At that time there was
even an introductory offer for ArcGIS for <1000 USD and that offer didn't
exist here in Denmark. The price difference could have paid for a whole trip
to the US !

I doubt that would be a problem. It probably doesn't happen a lot. Getting
updates in Australia may be a problem, however.

When the vendors give resellers local monopolies they can get away with a
lot of stuff.

I think MapInfo would like to increase the US price rather than decrease
that in the rest of the world, but the US market is, I think, quite
resistant to that.
The UK has just had a modest increase in the price of MapInfo, but that is
the first in 13 years, apparently.
I have also asked what is to stop people ordering from another country, and
in short the answer is nothing legally. It is, though, contrary to the terms
for the reseller as you are supposed to stick to your territory. Also, the
keycodes tell MapInfo the source of the product, so the purchaser risks them
refusing upgrades or declining to supply technical support.
All in all I would say it might be irritating, but it probably isn't worth
the short term cost saving.
You certainly can buy MapInfo off the shelf - I have seen a number of US
retailers that just ship out a box to you. You can do it on our web site,
for example, in the online shop too (though we decline non UK / Ireland
orders).

1) The price differential should cause UK price to go down, not up!
2) The price rise is global, including the US.
It's basically a price rise across the board with no FX adjustment.

It seems that our maintenance plan agreement was of bigger value than
expected, then.
Is MI Pro 9 shipping yet?
On software pricing:
The price of software depends on what the customers are willing, or
can be forced to pay.
Unlike cars, vacuum cleaners or the like, the cost for manufacture,
marketing and distribution per unit of software is negligible.
The cost lies in the development and updating of the software, and
that cost has to be divided by the number of units sold before a
profit can be made. But how many units can you sell?
Well a lower price sells more units, but if you only expect to sell a
limited number of units, the total income may not yield any profit.
A higher price may inhibit sales, especially if there are competing
(cheaper) products.
So the scheme is to set the price as high as you dare, and the limit
is different in different markets. That's why we see differing prices
globally. Think of MapInfo as the proverbial Big Mac.
And given that the choice of GIS is only part a rational decision, but
mostly creed, the cost level can be higher than if customers had a
completely free choice.

Not only is MI first-purchase pricing and upgrades pricing in Australia out of kilter with the USA (exchange rate), but the upgrade period is 3 months shorter.
On 6 July, I was advised by an Australian distributor to get my v6.5 to 9.0 upgrade in by July 1, else I pay a price penalty.
Yesterday, an email from CMC International (no doubt thinking that the .AU in my email address means Augusta Georgia) offers me a $US price cheaper than I can get locally, with a cut-off period of 30 September 2007.
Customers may upgrade as far back as version v7.8. If you have a copy older than v7.8, you must purchase a "new" license not an upgrade. We will provide a "limited upgrade" period customers of v7.5 or earlier will be allowed to upgrade. Passed September 30, 2007, you will be required to purchase a new copy.
With that sort of deal, I’ll stick with v6.5 thanks.
