Can you update us on this issue? Unless we get some feedback from your
side, I see no point in using Numbered Highway feature at all...

I have tried to use the road code (DJ701 for instance) as numbered
highway and instead of showing up an icon (in Map Maker), it just
prevents the Preferred name of being displayed, so all I get is a road
with no rendered name. Looking at your samples, it seems that in
Pakistan this problem is not present (or could it be that Official
names get rendered while Preferred ones not?). Which puzzles me, I
thought the app works the same everywhere...
Since Maps hasn't been updated since I started mapping, I have no way
to detect what icons are used and where; browsing through other
countries makes me think that Maps does support different icon sets
per country.
Anyways, I'm waiting for an answer from GMM or Jen, it's no point
guessing the behavior.

Signage were requested (for PK by momers) to be updated to official
design as appear in road side information boards and so supposed to be
for other countries as well.
This all am not guessing, I'm telling experience of oberservation/

The bounding box that is seen on the highways in India, Pakistan,
Vietnam, etc. is automatically set by Map Maker when a number is
detected in the name. Again, this does not seem to be working in
Romania. We are investigating the cause and will let you know of any
updates.
For now, I would advise you to mark using 'Type of Name' as
"Preferred" and also add an alternate name using 'Numbered Highway'.
Thanks,
Map Maker Guide.

Thanks for answering. However, while you're investigating, can you
please let us know how name rules are applied during rendering? This
is the "bigger question" in this post. We need to know what are the
expected effects of each type of name, both in Maps and Map Maker, of
name orders and languages etc. If name rules are different for roads/
POIs, then we need to know these differences. Maybe a help page would
be a good idea, to keep this info visible for everyone.
I mean, your developers must have had a functional spec of how each
name is rendered and where. We need that spec in a "user-friendly"
text. It's hard enough to get users to enter data consistently, so
there's no point in making this harder by not knowing the exact
outcome of data entry.
About the bounding box - see the test results I obtained (described in
the initial postings on this thread). It seems that in Romania you can
only use numbers as "Numbered highway" names - the bounding boxes
appear in this case.
Furthermore - are these bounding boxes country-specific in Maps? I
found differences between countries. If so, can we give sample of
official road icons per each road type in Romania so they're used in
Maps? At a minimum, giving different background color per road type
would do.
Regards,
Dan C.
- The bounding boxes will also appear if you do not use the "Numbered
Highway" attribute. We have country-wise rules that detect the
numbered highway's and give them the boxes on Map Maker. But, as
acknowledged, this does not seem to be working consistently :(
- For the official road icons that are seen on Maps, they are
generated separately. Here is the Maps icon for E60:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Romania&sll=-3.787522,115.037842&sspn=14.464859,9.536133&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Romania&ll=46.800118,23.238316&spn=0.077733,0.074501&t=h&z=14
If this is not an accurate icon, you can post the pictures of the sign
and we will try to get that on Maps. Here is the issue that Pakistan
mappers had created: http://code.google.com/p/google-mapmaker/issues/detail?id=112
FYI: It does take a considerable amount of time for the icons to get
updated :)
Having said that, I understand that having a user friendly help page
for this info would be great. We will definitely work on it and let
you know.
Thanks & Regards,
Map Maker Guide.
OK, we're progressing. So the bounding box rules are country-specific,
which explains why it's broken for Romania.
1. You say the bounding boxes would appear even when only Preferred is
used as road name. Why was Numbered highway then added? It's redundant
info and just confuses the users. You need to decide between these two
approaches:
- either "detect" the road number based on the country rules - in this
case the road name must comply to the country's official format, e.g.
DNxx for national highways; the bounding box would display the road
number extracted from the name
- let the user choose by using Numbered highway - in this case the
bounding box displays the name "as-is". No number validation or
whatever, just display the numbered highway name in the bounding box.
Should I point out the second method is more flexible? :). I can add
these comments to the original issue in the tracker, if necessary.
2. About the icons in Maps: European roads (Exx) work correctly in
Romania, and the icon is correct. Problem is we need different icons
for different road priorities. Even worse, we don't know the already
available icons (in Maps) - maybe they are already correct. Is it
possible to give us a link with the available bounding box icons for
Romania?

Dan C.

You might have noticed that the roads marked 'Numbered Highway' have
started showing up after the recent update. Link:
http://www.google.com/mapmaker?hl=en&fll=44.866516,24.89562&fr=0.001217,0.001717&mpp=3.385857&gw=39&ll=44.867793,24.901586&spn=0.038354,0.041327&z=15&iwloc=0_0&fid=4661995750288285813:16339407562260804410&dtab=overview
The boxes are still not rendering though. I will let you know of any
updates. Please feel free to create the issue tracker entry based on
your thoughts.

As the data for Romania was updated on Google Maps, here is how the
icon looks:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Bucharest,+Romania&sll=45.802598,24.795284&sspn=0.158324,0.149174&g=45.80882,24.791336&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Bucharest,+Romania&ll=44.436905,26.396756&spn=0.04054,0.037293&z=15
If that icon does not depict reality, you can post an enhancement
request on the Issue Tracker with the picture of the icon.
For example, Pakistan users had posted this on the Issue Tracker
( http://code.google.com/p/google-mapmaker/issues/detail?id=112 ) and
now have a cool icon as seen here:
http://www.google.com/mapmaker?hl=en&fll=25.277758,68.019136&fr=0.000194,0.000215&mpp=0.539987&gw=12&ll=25.332632,68.141863&spn=0.006434,0.004946&z=18

1. Thanks for fixing the numbered highway display issue. You haven't
answered about which approach to use for the bounding box names
though... I'll make an issue with the latter option (which is the best
in my opinion).
2. The icon you sampled is the one for european roads and freeways. As
initially stated, it is correct and should not be changed.
However we also have a red icon, shown here:
http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=47.804162,25.931511&spn=0.07921,0.154324&z=13.
This appears for national highways and secondary roads, or so it seems
(which is only partly correct - the icon is perfect for highways but
wrong for secondaries). So I was actually asking for some insider info
- whether you have any other icons already in the database that we
don't know about, so I know what to write in the issue tracker.
About the icons: we're speaking here of Maps icons. But, is it
possible to introduce some differences for the Map Maker bounding
boxes (also in relation with the discussion on the numbered highway
issues). That is, even when you fixed the bounding boxes in Map Maker,
they would still be all the same, regardless of road type. Is it
possible to make bounding boxes different (e.g. different background
color) per road type? Using actual icons is too much (after all Map
Maker is pretty much a "developer tool"), but having all numbered
highway roads display the same bounding box regardless of priority is
quite odd and confusing.

Dan C.

1. Please do create the issue. At this point in time I could not
answer your question about the need for the options as they do not
seem to be working as intended. I'll have to get back to you on this.
2. Oops, I should have mentioned this, the icons will now be rendering
the same way both on Google Maps & Map Maker. Which is why I posted
the MM link for Pakistan. After the data push, that is how it will
look on both interfaces.
3. If the Icon for secondaries is not correct, please create an Issue
Tracker entry as elaborated earlier mentioning the priority type.
(Though it might take some time to be fixed)
4. There can be different icons for different priorities. Check out
the icons for N5 (Primary) & M-2 (Controlled Access) here:
http://www.google.com/mapmaker?hl=en&fll=31.46663,74.229877&fr=0.000732,0.000858&mpp=2.037452&gw=39&ll=31.463829,74.227731&spn=0.024288,0.019784&z=16&iwloc=0_0&fid=4114322050473529241:7729826516828251874
Hope that answers your questions {except no.1 :-) }
