Welcome back from Spring Break!  

Reminder to all Junior parents:  You are cordially invited to attend the Junior Ring Ceremony this Friday, April 20th at 10 AM in Manual Auditorium.  This is a dressy event, where students are encouraged to dress up while remaining within the school dress code policy.  Parents, students received information regarding the day and time of this event in March.  Please check with them regarding other information they may have received, as well. We look forward to seeing you on Friday, April 20th.

Special Announcements:
 
REMINDER for incoming students interested in athletics -  an open house will be held tonight for incoming students interested in athletics.  The event will be held (Tuesday, April 17) from 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm in the large gymnasium.  There will be a brief meeting at 6 PM then parents and students will be released to visit the various sports teams.  There will be information distributed by each sport regarding off-season, summer, and tryout schedules for the near future.
  
 
University of Louisville / Manual High School Cardinal Boulevard Renovation Project -  The UL / Manual High School Cardinal Boulevard renovation project will begin Wednesday 4/18/12. Phase I will be the demolition of the chain link fence on the Manual side of Cardinal Boulevard. This will be replaced with a beautiful decorative brick and stone wall. Phase II, which will be work on the UL side, will begin after Derby. Access to Cardinal Boulevard will not be affected until May 31st . At this time, there will be various traffic detours while work on the actual roadway is completed. The entire project will be completed by 8/15/12.

Proctors Needed for End of Year Testing - Due to the changes in our curriculum this year, Manual will be administering End of Year testing.  This will include US History, Algebra II, English II, and Biology.  The testing will be April 24th - 27th from 8am-11:30am.  For every 25 students there needs to be 1 proctor.  We need 10 parent volunteers per session.  All volunteers must attend a short training on April 23rd. IdeaFestival Manual High School: April 27 3:30 to 8:30 and April 28 9-3:30, Manual students are hosting the First and ONLY High School level IdeaFestival in the Nation. Mayor Fischer and Superintendent Hargans are opening the event with students from ALL magnets contributing. Students are speakers and performers. The event is open to students, parents, community members, and other schools. Donations and Volunteers desperately needed. Cash donations to Manual PTSA for IdeaFestival. We need food to feed these teens!! There is an opportunity to make food for this event and keep proceeds for any clubs or sports teams that need to earn money for their programs.   We also need donations for pizza, need soda, large containers for ice and soda, sweets, napkins. Will have food vendors for Saturday lunch while live YPAS performances entertain you.  We need lead volunteers for sponsors, marketing, and final details. duPont Manual Sports Physicals - On Friday, May 11th, Manual High School will be conducting sports physicals for 2012 / 2013.  Physicals will take place in the Manual Cafeteria, after school beginning at 2:45 - 5 PM (Football will have separate physicals on May 23). The cost is $15 (make checks to Manual High School).   No student will be given a physical unless their entire physical and addendum is filled out completely - in advance. All physicals and addendum forms will be kept on file at Manual. No forms will be handed back to students. THE  5th ANNUAL SLYDER CUP GOLF SCRAMBLE -  will again benefit the duPont Manual Boys’ Golf Team & The First Tee of Louisville. Project Graduation 2012: A safe celebration for all Manual Seniors!!  - Project Graduation is an all night (Graduation Night from 11 PM  - 5 AM) , alcohol-free and drug-free celebration for the graduating senior class.  On the night our seniors graduate, after some time to celebrate with their families, they will want to celebrate with their classmates.  The Manual community wants to provide THE PLACE TO GO where a good time can be had by all.  But we need your help to make it happen!! The budget for Project Graduation last year was over $17,000, plus the value of donated prizes. It’s free to graduating seniors!  We need your generous donations! Manual College & Career Center (CCC) now open to parents - Attention parents: The CCC located inside the Manual Guidance Office (room 132) is a wonderful resource center for all Manual students looking for college comparison guides, college major guides, scholarship information, financial aid, summer opportunities for underclassmen, college marketing materials from hundreds of colleges, and much more.  During the months of  February and March the CCC will be open from 8AM - 2PM each school day for Manual parents to come take advantage of these resources too. If you are planning to visit colleges over spring break, this would be a great way to gather materials and information.  As always, parents must sign in at the main office, and get a visitor's badge. Parents can come in by themselves or meet their student during student's study hall or lunch break.  The CCC will be closed on March 6 due to ACT testing. "TEAM TEXTBOOK” Volunteers Needed - Joining “TEAM TEXTBOOK” is a great way to get to know the building, our great staff, Manual's diverse student body and the curriculum offered within our various magnet programs. The job of receiving, cataloguing, storing, issuing, distributing and re-shelving these books is a massive undertaking and is overseen by Assistant Principal and Director of Admissions, Gregory Kuhn. Each task is broken down into easy to follow steps and each volunteer receives clear guidance on how to perform in any given role. There’s plenty to do and you won't get bored. Mr. Kuhn assembles a team of volunteers to make this job manageable (and even fun) for all involved. CENTRE FELLOWS PROGRAM - valued up to $56,000 - for current high school juniors that have Centre College for their first choice in colleges with an ACT score of 28 or better - deadline has been extended until May 1, 2012

KELSEY HARRIS WRITING SCHOLARSHIP - valued at $1,000 - for high school seniors pursuing a career in writing or English

LILY BANERJEE SCHOLARSHIP - valued at $1,000 - for high school seniors that attended Wheatley Elementary School for at least 2 years and will be attending college in Kentucky.

NATIONAL FOUNDATION FOR ADVANCEMENT IN THE ARTS YOUNG ARTS SCHOLARSHIP - valued up to $10,000 plus many extras - for students interested in majoring in several different artistic disciplines, grades 10-12 or ages 15-18.

SULLIVAN COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY AND DESIGN - I may nominate two seniors to receive a $500 scholarship if you are planning to attend the Sullivan College of Technology and Design.  See me if you would like to receive this award.

Fund Your Seat Campaign - The Producers, the parent organization of YPAS, are conducting a fundraiser titled, “Fund Your Seat.”  This fundraiser is designed to raise enough money to replace all of the audience seats (dated late 70’s) in the Main Stage Theatre. “Fund Your Seat” provides you the ability to sponsor a seat in the Main Stage Theatre.  In doing so, you will get an engraved nameplate attached to the seat you sponsor with your name or a brief tribute.  There are two different prices for the seats depending on the seat you choose ($175 and $225).  For an order form please visit www.ypas.producers.org.  Please take time to visit the PHOTO SESSION on the Website to see creative pictures of faculty, staff, and students promoting the “Fund Your Seat” fundraiser.
