I’ve thought about it for long enough!  It’s time to do it!

I’m planning a ride from Sydney to Canberra at the end of April beginning of May and I’d love to have some ManMos company for some credit card cycle touring.

My plan is to ride from the Opera House to Canberra Parliament House over 4 days and then spend an extra day in Canberra to enjoy the cycling there with Molly.  It will be scenic all the way (see below) and will avoid main highways wherever possible. The trip breaks nicely into four segments and there will be plenty of accommodation and eateries available at each stop. The weather is guaranteed to be cooler and drier by that time of year.

Day 1 (29 April ’10)       Sydney to Wollongong

This will follow much of the standard ‘Sydney to the ‘gong’ route but will use more of the back streets and cycleways than the mass ride allows.

Day 2 (30 April ’10)       Wollongong to Moss Vale

Down the eastern side of Lake Illawarra to Warilla and Albion Park, then up the Macquarie Pass (yes, it’s a b…… of a climb, but we can take as long as we like) to Robertson for a rest and Moss Vale for overnight.  Perhaps a Southern Highlands red by the fireplace at Dormie House.

Day 3 (1 May ’10)          Moss Vale to Goulburn

Country roads to Bundanoon and Ye Olde Cycle Shoppe or perhaps a stop at the local Buddhist monastery (few know it’s even there). It’s all easy rolling countryside and off highway into Goulburn and The Big Marino.

Day 4 (2 May ’10)          Goulburn to Canberra

Through the big sheep country down the eastern side of Lake George to Tarago, Bungendore, Queanbeyan and finally into Canberra for a sunset photo at Parliament House.

Day 5 (3 May ’10)           Canberra

I’m planning to have Molly meet me for some time in Canberra and then to give me a lift back to Sydney. Others might want to consider a similar arrangement, or return by train, coach, or plane.  All will transport bicycles with varying levels of complexity.

So here is the invitation. If we get a ManMos Group together, we might even be able to negotiate some group deals at motels along the way, although rates and availability shouldn’t be a problem for the weekend after ANZAC Day. Let me know what you think.
