Not really, but I did enjoy making my way around the Arnold Palmer
Golf Course at Brier Creek Country Club in Raleigh without once
uttering a cussword, losing a ball, or flinging a club.
Fifty or so runners toed the start line of The Chilly Open in front of
the clubhouse Saturday morning and headed off to the third hole
fairway. We stayed on cart paths jumping the occasional puddle and
looped our way up and down the undulating course admiring the views
and appreciating the lull in the rain. No errant drives or runaway
golf carts impeded our progress. We all made the final turn back to
the clubhouse finish bogey-free. Inside we were treated to endless
coffee, cake, yogurt and bananas. I doubt I could afford to be a
member of Brier Creek, but to be able to run around that course and
enjoy the amenities including long sleeve shirt, all for 25 bucks
seems like a good deal. I’d definitely consider returning next
year. Brier Creek also hosts a 5k on Thanksgiving morning. The race
director told me that it is run in the opposite direction around the
golf course.
Winner of this race was a sixteen year old. Last race I ran on
asphalt over in Oxford , the winner was 55. You just never know
who’s gonna show up.
