Dean spoke out at the RRCA convention in San Francisco this year (in typical
style, he ran to the talk and back). I had the chance to talk with him
afterward, and he seemed like a genuinely nice guy. He offered a lot of
encouragement about my first 50 miler that I was doing in a few weeks, and
seemed to take time for everyone who wanted to talk or get their picture
taken with him.

Regards,
Mike

I just finished reading his book "50 50" about his 50 marathons in 50
states in 50 days in 2008. When he ran in NC he ran the Triple lakes
Trail marathon in Greensboro. I seem to remember that some MTC
members ran with Dean. Anybody have any personal memories about him
or his abilities? Is as a nice a guy as he is portrayed in the book.
No real comments about the race or any runners except to say it was a
very scenic course. Any body have any insight to offer?

Hi
Crystal Moore and I ran with him that day.  It was my first marathon (Halloween) and he called me out, hugged me and wished me good luck.  He was a nice guy but definitely more "Hollywood" with highlighted hair and VERY white teeth.
He ran about a four hour pace on singletrack (faster than me, I might add) and chatted with everyone along the way.  Considering he was pretty badly banged up from a fall in Atlanta the day before, and sleep deprived, he was quite personable.  Crystal mentioned that her brother in law was the ultra runner John Geesler, who he knows well, and he later mentioned running with us to John.
It was a beautiful day, perfect weather.  Crystal hung with me the entire way--although she probably could have finished an hour earlier!  Lots of race/course support from the Greensboro area running club--especially since there were only around 100 of us.
I have to admit that I was disappointed that this race didn't get more of a mention in his book--especially because the course is unique and beautiful.
Lori
PS--several of us took a wrong turn at mile 20--and ended up adding a mile or so to the race--so technically this was my first marathon and my first ultra. :-)
