hunter orange

Was out running on the Falls Lake Trail recently and after hearing
nearby gunfire I noted my attire and thought about my collection of
teeshirts back home and came to the conclusion that I did not own one
tee shirt that could be considered hunter or blaze or safety orange.
I do have a Uwarrie shirt that's more a burnt orange color. I also
have eyecatching dayglo yellow shirts from the 2009 Promise Land and
the 2008 Hat Run races, but other than those I've got nothing that
seems to say: just the thing for hunting season.

I do have a tobaggon that's bright orange, but I can't remember where
I put it after last winter.

Was curious as what precautionary measures other trailrunners might
take when hunting season arrives. Switch to roads? Run only on
Sunday? jeff

You might want to get something quickly.  A fellow MM reported that during the North Central Trail in MD this weekend, he saw a deer while he was taking a bathroom break, saw puff of smoke and heard gunfire.  Yelled at hunter and beat it out of there. Took away my desire to try that one.

Never heard of a trail runner being accidentally shot.  Most hunters are very careful just as most car drivers are, however, the occasional exception exist for both.  I do not hesitate to run trails at any time.  I generally wear a bright yellow or orange during all trail runs not for that but rather in the event that I become lost or injured so I would be easy to find.  You will find a much greater chance of injury on roads being struck by a car .  As a paramedic, I have treated countless runners struck by cars in 20+ years and never treated a runner injured by a hunter.  The NC Wildlife Resource Commission posts an annual report of hunting related accidents and to my knowledge, this has not shown up in previous years.  Good point though and something to consider.  As trail runners, we know that safety should always be a priority to prevent injury, being lost, falls, environmental emergencies, and so forth.

Hmmmm...my doctor, who happens to live in my neighborhood, is always
trying to kill me. He has threatened (repeatedly) to run my over if
he sees me running in the neighborhood {something about obscenely low
cholestoral - or some such drivel), so I always wear camo and run at
night in the neighborhood.
On the other hand, I have to caution you against running trail in a
historically accurate Viking helmet - they are extremely
uncomfortable, do not wick moisture well, and....well....to untrained
hunters appear to be something they are not.

I always carry an Uzi when I run trails that way if I am fired upon, I
can
certainly defend myself. I got my experience playing Cowboys and
Indians
ages ago. It really helped me fight off warrior and hunters alike.

I found Alan's comment useful about bright colors coming in handy
should lost or injured be an issue.

Matt Kirk's last blog post "thankful" recounts his Thanksgiving Day
romp thru the Roan Highlands. In the photos he looks to be attired in
black. In the text he relates encountering many hunters and
eventually he dons some pink flagging in order to make himself more
conspicuous.

And a note to Mama Jean. I ran that North Central Marathon years
ago. Wish I'd gone back to do it again. Always seemed to close out
before I got around to registering. It's a very scenic, easy-going
race. The B&A Trail Marathon which is up your way is somewhat similar
and is run in a quieter season (March). My favorite was the
Montgomery County Marathon, but unfortunately that's defunct. jeff
