Hi, I switched off crawl blocking on my site the other day and since then have been getting hundreds of odd 404 messages in Webmaster Tools e.g.:

"photograph/1993-83-25-34/www.bolton.gov.uk"

I work for Bolton Council but the site I'm working on (boltonworktown.co.uk) is not directly related. I do link to bolton.gov.uk in the footer but otherwise I can't understand how this URL is turning up in the Crawl errors.

I can't for the life of me think where else I may have included bolton.gov.uk either in the templates or in the site database (a quick find across my theme directory only shows the instance in the footer).

I'm using the Yoast SEO plugin, in case this has any bearing, though I can't see the erroneous links in any of the xml sitemaps.

Does anyone have any idea what might be happening?

Thanks
Perry

Becaouse you missing out the http:// in the url. It should be http://www.bolton.gov.uk and not www.bolton.gov.uk

<a class="site-link" href="www.bolton.gov.uk" title="Bolton Council" rel="home"><span>Bolton Council</span></a>

should be

<a class="site-link" href="http://www.bolton.gov.uk" title="Bolton Council" rel="home"><span>Bolton Council</span></a>

Cheers Azzam - it looks as if the answer was staring me in the face.

I think that one counts as a schoolboy error!

I've made the change - hopefully things will change for the better once the site is crawled again.

I think that one counts as a schoolboy error! :)

Easily done, and yes the spiders do share empathy and can be forgiveable.

Interestingly, just moved to Bolton and feel like sending you a long rant on my issues with the council LOL.

I think we get so used to tools that automatically turn something that looks like a web address into a fully functioning link that we  sometimes forget there is a syntax that should be followed.

You can mark those 404's as resolved in Webmaster Tools -- I don't know if it makes Google come back and cralw your site again, but I saw the option has been introduced.

That is a good tip, even if it just serves as a checklist Mike.

Ha ha - I'm in libraries and museums so hopefully I'm not on your list ;)

Obviously if the museum's websites or the library catalogue template is giving you problems then you know who to talk to :D

Cheers

Cheers Mike - I'm just getting my head round Webmaster Tools after not looking at it for a while. I've now got 760 resolved links to check :S

Actually not as bad as I thought. You can show up to 500 rows and then check them all at once.

What's a Measures and Library?

Oh I know, one of those places people would visit before Google Maps got inside views of buildings and Libraries before the days of itunes/kindle/ipads, etc.

Just kidding.  had a chance to go to Bolton Museum before moving in and was pleasantly surprised with what was on.  I still buy or read paper based books, hooray!

Kind Regards
