plug ins to stop Spam

Hi Everyone,
Im recieving about 20 messages of spam on my comments a day. Its really annoying. When i last cleared it out i had 750 spam messages! and im notified by email every time i get a comment, so its pretty annoying. are there any plug ins to stop all of this nonsense about knock off designer handbags i keep getting?

Firstly go into settings, and discussion, choose comment author must have a previously approved comment.  That way only comments from approved commenters get through.

I dont think i did manage to activate it, i remember not understanding it. its only been in the last 2 months that the spam has got ridiculous. i'll have a go at both of your suggestions.

About Akismet http://akismet.com/

It's job is to stop comment spam, which seems to be the problem you've got.
