Subject: WP Mobile version plugin

Does anyone have any experience of using one of the plugins that provide a
mobile phone readable version of a WP site?

I have an eCommerce site at www.mantex.co.uk, for which I would like to
provide a mobile phone readable version.

There seem to be quite a few four and even five star options available, but
none provide clear "How to" instructions

Any suggestions or advice very welcome

cheers

I've started using WPTouch, literally from last night, but it only deals
with the blogging side of the site, I'd like people to be able to view
other content as well ideally, so would be interested in hearing people's
views, too.

There is limitations on what an existing site can do by integrating an
addon to manipulate the set up and that of a site coded specifically as a
mobile version or the plugin modified and custom to function specifically
around your site.

As far a Wordpress+WPtouch is concerned they will work with each other in
the boundaries of each others primary set up and functions.  It is not
until the developers of WPTouch explore other plugins, layouts, addons
i.e.nextgen gallery,  that the plugin is modified to accommodate but they
only currently modify for popular plugins anything that is more customised
to your site set up may require you to use a developer to make the changes
in the WPtouch coding.

You have to ask a specific question and cite and example [preference

with  modification

There is an awful lot more to making a site look good and behave well on a
mobile phone than clickable phone numbers...

I realise that, I just wanted to help with the phone number
clickability.

There are some lovely free mobile-first templates available that will
work properly in all browsers. Would you like me to find you some
links? There are plugins that help but many of them will redirect to a
mobile version of the site, which might not be what you want to do.

Maybe more work (as in redesign) but have you considered a responsive
design that would resize your layout according to screen size.

There are a few decent responsive WP templates that could be restyled.

Thanks for replies to my initial request

As I suspected, there appears to be more to this than might meet the eye

So let me take a step back and ask a more fundamental question

What options are available for making a web site available to mobile phone
users?

Am I right in thinking there are two fundamental possibilities?

One - to detect that a request comes from a mobile phone user, and to divert
the user to a separate site that is designed especially for  mobiles

Two - for one's existing WordPress site plus a clever plugin (with a
separate stylesheet) to deliver up one's existing WP content for viewing on
a mobile

Is this true? Which option is easier to handle? Are there any other
possibilities?

Cheers

Roy

Just throwing it in as something to bear in mind (your ecommerce sites are
probably very different)...

<off thread>

For the service, professional and health related guys whose websites I look
after, my own research showed that a staggering number of visitors (88% is
the figure stuck in my head) bounced after reaching the page with contact
information, the contact page was the number 1 hop after the homepage land
too by a massive amount.

So for a couple of guys who were interested in being more useful to mobile
users we setup a new page with contact details and opening times (if
applicable), then with WPTouch we made our mobile users land on that first.
Granted the bounce rate for mobile users sky rocketed but we took that as a
job well done.

The whole Google Local thing may make this a little useless now though I
will admit.

A mobile-first theme would display your website on all browser sizes
but adjust based on the screen size. Responsive design is a different
thing; it will serve stylesheets via media queries based on the screen
size. A mobile-first website will adjust to fit the screen because it
uses percentages, min-widths, and floats. Typically, only one
stylesheet is involved. Responsive images will work either as max-
width or as a range of sizes served to the browser via media queries.

While responsive design is a hot topic, mobile-first design is
starting to take over. It works by designing for the smallest screen
size and letting the content fill the screen. Mobile-first designs
tend to have simple layouts and sometimes boxed text set to a minimum
width. Here's an example of a mobile-first theme for WP:

Just responsive design. This works by adding extra mark up to your style
sheet (aka media queries).

These check the width and even orientation of the device viewing a given
page and resize and/or reflow the content to fit.

This isn't a quick fix as it needs some thought about how to mark up your
template (or alternatively adapt a ready made responsive theme).

The advantage is that you can cater for all screen sizes from mobile to
tablet to widescreen.

I'm not sure how well supported this is for older mobiles if you need to
cater for these users.

Apologies Wendy, you answered while I was making my reply.

My take is that "mobile first" is a design technique that is applied to
responsive design rather than a separate approach (still uses media queries
and css etc) .

Did you look at the one I linked? The more sophisticated ones do
indeed use media queries but some of them are just dead simple. They
don't always fill the screen up; the one I linked has a relatively
small max width compared to my monitor but it's perfect for mobile.
The other one I saw has boxes set to float left. They slide beneath
each other on a mobile screen. I've done some experimenting on making
mobile websites and found that you can either do it mobile first which
means you can't have more than two columns or they'll get squashed or
you can have a redirect to a different stylesheet that serves
different-sized images according to the breakpoints you have set for
monitor size. The http://leonpaternoster.com/scherzo/ website has but
one CSS file. View source to see the code. There's a JavaScript but it
doesn't redirect it to another CSS file. The CSS it has is being
supported by the JavaScript so it seems we're both right.

Here's the code: <!--[if lt IE 9]>

                        <script src="http://css3-mediaqueries-js.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/
css3-mediaqueries.js"></script>
                        <script src="http://html5shim.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/html5.js"></
script>

Mind you, I might have a wrong idea of what "media queries" means. I
thought it was to do with detecting the mobile device via breakpoints
based on monitor size.
